Mafia: The Old Country Review Roundup – Great Story, Familiar Flaws

Story Highlight
  • Mafia: The Old Country reviews are out.
  • Reviews praise the game’s visuals and narrative, which is still a solid one despite feeling awfully similar.
  • The gameplay falls short, getting repetitive and boring even with the 13-hour gameplay journey.

Just a day ahead of release, the review embargo on Mafia: The Old Country has finally been lifted. While the new entry does take a few steps forward with its changed approach towards a linear narrative, it does take a few steps backward, too.

Aside from the 1900s Sicily setting, not much has changed with the franchise as the latest entry is still a victim of the same old repetitive gameplay that does get boring, even with the short 13-hour gameplay it offers.

Why it matters: 2K Games had a decade to work on the new Mafia game, but they still made the same mistakes that Mafia 3 made.

6.5 – Digital Trends

Currently, Mafia: The Old Country holds a 76 score of generally favorable on Metacritic. Most reviewers claim that the game doesn’t reinvent the wheel in any way, despite developers 2k Games claiming they set out to change things for the game.

That said, the game’s visuals are pretty amazing, and 2k Games has done a commendable job in recreating the 1900s Sicily rural setting that feels like an “Italian Holiday,” as said by one reviewer.

The shift to Unreal Engine 5 has also borne some great results with stunning visuals and amazing character models that the series is renowned for.

Moving forward to the narrative, Mafia: The Old Country features a plot many would consider cliche in its genre. There’s nothing different the game has to offer in a classic mob epic, but it’s one worth following through.

Next Mafia Game Already In The Works

The vocal performances are epic, and the 13-hour journey is well worth following. Most reviewers are divided on the lead, who isn’t that memorable compared to past protagonists like Vito or Tommy.

Gameplay is quite repetitive and boring too, and isn’t much different than Mafia 3 altogether. There’s no depth aside from the typical third-person shooting behind the cover or the basic stealth gameplay.

Nevertheless, Mafia: The Old Country is still a worthwhile game to play, especially with its $50 price tag that will justify its flaws.

A Strategic Move: Sony Confirms Shift To Multiplatform Business Model

Story Highlight
  • Sony has just confirmed that it will be shifting to the multiplatform business model.
  • The company is shifting its gaming business from hardware-centric to a community and engagement-based platform model.
  • It is surprising, as a recent job posting almost confirmed the company’s intent to do so.

After Sony announced Helldivers 2 for Xbox, many fans started wondering whether more games will be coming to the platform. A recent job posting more or less confirmed that the gaming giant will be releasing more of its titles to other platforms

Still, fans weren’t ready to believe that Sony could do something like that, but they have to accept reality now as the company has just confirmed its transition to the multiplatform business model

Why it matters: After Xbox embraced the multiplatform business model, its hardware sales did take a hit, but its software and services have seen a boost. In fact, four out of the five best-selling games were from Microsoft on PS5.

Sony AI
Sony has confirmed that it will adopt the multiplatform strategy

The Senior Vice President of Sony, Sadahiko Hayakawa, said that the company’s business won’t revolve around hardware anymore. It is shifting its business from a hardware-centric model to a community and engagement-based platform, meaning the company wants to target the fan base of other platforms too.

In the gaming business, we are moving away from a hardware centric business model more to a platform business that expands the community and increases engagement.

As Microsoft has reported, highly positive revenue thanks to its multiplatform strategy, Sony seems to be following suit. This shift is mainly being done to improve stability and profitability.

Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo Remains The Only Platform With Exclusive Releases

So, just like Microsoft, the company will be shifting its focus from the hardware business slightly and focusing more on the other platforms. It doesn’t mean that the company will abandon the hardware.

A PlayStation 6 and next-gen Xbox are already in development. While both companies are embracing the multiplatform strategy, it doesn’t mean there won’t be some sort of rivalry between them. Whoever makes the next console better, more powerful, and cheaper will be most beneficial.

Battlefield 6 Prioritizes Fun And Balance Over Realism, Says Dice Dev

Story Highlight
  • Battlefield 6 depicts realistic elements with its destruction, gunplay, and more.
  • Despite these elements, Dice says the game is more focused on fun and balance than realism.
  • The first-person shooter will still be more grounded than competitors like Call of Duty.

Battlefield 6 has turned many heads following its multiplayer gameplay reveal. In fact, the game has already topped Steam charts, and the early access beta test is seeing unprecedented demand from players.

Dice has clearly done a lot right with this iteration of the series, with many appreciating the destruction and attention to detail. In particular, fans have come to appreciate the more realistic elements of Battlefield 6, but Dice says the game doesn’t strive to be as realistic as possible.

Why it matters: Battlefield has never been considered a military simulation game, but it has typically stuck to a style of gameplay closer to reality. It seems Battlefield 6 is taking the same approach.

Battlefield 6 Fun Over Realism
Dice Responds To Debate About Realism In BF6 | Image via Twitter

Dice’s Principal Game Designer recently addressed fan concerns regarding sniper glints. For context, snipers have a distinct glint in Battlefield 6 that reveals their location from afar.

The developer confirmed that glints would be toned down but not removed entirely. This prompted a response from Twitter user bighungry, who claimed that Battlefield 6 seems to be going for a realistic feel, but this decision goes against the realistic elements.

The Dice developer then confirmed that the team places fun and balance above realism. However, the game is still set in a believable and more grounded universe for immersion’s sake.

Compared to milsim games like Arma or Squad, the game is still very arcady in nature. At the same time, it retains realistic weapon-handling, destruction, and lifelike visuals to somewhat emulate a war-like experience.

Dice has confirmed that fans won’t see microtransactions like Call of Duty’s in Battlefield 6, further adding to the game’s believability. However, this statement also means that fans can expect balance changes and gameplay design choices that don’t necessarily depict reality.

BF6 Is Just A Few Months Away

Anyhow, Battlefield 6 arrives in just a few more months. The game is officially set for launch in October, with the open beta going live later this week for everyone to play.

Sony Admits Live-Service Strategy Has Been Rough So Far, Hopes To Learn From Mistakes

Story Highlight
  • Despite failures like Concord, Sony still aims to focus on the live-service model.
  • The gaming giant has canceled at least ten games, and some are delayed.
  • The CFO has admitted that there are many issues, but the model has been so profitable for the company that they won’t abandon it.

Big publishers like Sony are increasing their focus on live-service genre despite a lot of cancellations and failures. The gaming giant has canceled at least 10 live service projects, and after such a disaster, a company would think twice before focusing on the same genre, right?

While it has admitted that the PlayStation’s live-service strategy has been rough lately, it doesn’t aim to back down. Instead, it will learn from the mistakes and carry on.

Why it matters: Sony’s live service projects have been nothing but a disaster. Many didn’t even get to see the light of day, but those who did (Concord) met a pretty dire fate.

Concord gaming
Concord is one of the biggest PlayStation failures.

Following the company’s latest financial results, in a  Q&A session, the update on PlayStation’s live service plan was asked, along with how the gaming giant aims to improve the issues

To this question, Sony’s CFO Lin Tao replied and said that despite the hostile reception of Concord and Marathon, she thinks the live service model is worth trying. That is mainly because in the past five years, this model has proved to be beneficial for the company by increasing revenue.

In terms of the transformation, it’s not entirely going smoothly. Of course, we recognise that there are still many issues, so we should learn the lessons from mistakes and make sure that we introduce live service content where there’s less waste and it’s more smooth.

-Lin Tao

The CFO has admitted that there are still many issues but aims to solve them instead of abandoning the model. Thanks to Destiny 2, Helldivers 2, Gran Turismo 7, and MLB The Show, the gaming giant has seen significant profits.

However, on the other hand, Concord met with such a poor reception that it was taken offline, and Bungie’s upcoming Marathon has been in development hell for quite a long time. The latter was delayed and still doesn’t have a release date.

What are your thoughts about Sony still focusing on the live-service model? Share them with us in he comments section below or join the official Tech4Gamers forums.

Bungie To Soon Become A Complete Part of PlayStation Studios

Story Highlight
  • Sony CFO Says Bungie could soon shift roles and become a PlayStation Studios.
  • The studio had worked independently since its acquisition by Sony in 2022 for $3.6 billion.
  • This would mark a huge change in proceedings after Bungie failed to produce results.

Sony acquired Bungie Studios in 2022, hoping it would be a great partnership, especially amid the success of Destiny. Since then, while being a part of PlayStation, the studio has been working independently, but that could change soon.

During its recent financial briefing, Sony revealed that it plans to merge Bungie into the company, officially making it a ‘PlayStation Studio‘ after it has worked as its own division in the last 3 years.

Why it matters: Bungie hasn’t been able to produce the results expected of it. First, there were issues with the work environment, then the quality of games, so Sony has now decided to take the driving seat.

Destiny 3 Bungie Survey
Bungie could soon become a part of PlayStation Studios

Sony CFO Lin Tao recently revealed during a Q/A that Sony is considering making Bungie a PlayStation Studio. The independence is getting lighter, so the studio is shifting to a role more in line with other in-house studios.

This independence is getting lighter. So Bungie is shifting into a role which is becoming more a part of PlayStation Studios. And integration is also proceeding.

– Lin Tao

bungie marathon
Bungie hasn’t been able to produce the results expected of it

Naturally, considering the state of Bungie, this could be a blessing in disguise for the company. Destiny 2 isn’t in the best of shape, and even the upcoming Marathon seems to be suffering from poor reviews after internal testing.

Fans also seem to agree, for the most part. They argue that PlayStation taking over could lead to better game quality and overall increased creativity. This move possibly can’t make things any worse than they are now.

The results could be really interesting from here. Fans recently voted Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie as a terrible investment, but with increased focus, it could turn things around, as it’s not too late for it.

Due to the game servers being full, most players are currently waiting in the lobby for an opportunity to join a match. Remarkably, it hasn’t even been two hours since early access launched, and the game is already on track to break records.

It’s important to note that early access is limited to a select group of players who received game codes by signing up for Battlefield Labs. Fortunately, there is still an opportunity for players to obtain early access codes by streaming 30 minutes of Battlefield 6 on Twitch. This applies specifically to streams with drops enabled and tags for Battlefield 6.

Battlefield 6 Updates Will Be More Frequent Compared To Its Predecessor

Open Beta for the game begins from August 9-10, with the second week starting from August 14-17. The player count will likely increase by twice or even thrice till then as more players pour in.

Early previews for the game are pretty strong, and the Battlefield franchise might be making a comeback with this new entry. If anything, Call of Duty will face tough competition this year despite Activision dismissing any concerns of a threat from the rival release.

PS5 Surpasses 80 Million Units Sold, Just 2.5 Million Behind PS4 At Same Point In Lifecycle

Story Highlight
  • The PS5 consoles have officially sold 80.3 million units worldwide since launch.
  • The current console generation is just 2.5 million units behind in sales compared to the PS4 sales in the same period since launch.
  • PlayStation’s software side has also been rising in sales despite the lack of first-party releases, all thanks to Xbox-published games.

Sony has been on a roll in this current generation, persisting to dominate the console market. The PS5 continues its predecessor’s momentum and has now officially surpassed the 80 million sales mark.

Just for reference, the PS5 is just 2.5 million units behind the PS4 at the same point in its lifecycle.

Why it matters: 80 million units for a console is a gigantic number that has been achieved in less than 5 years. Despite initial challenges like limited supply and rising inflation, the PS5 has established itself as another success for Sony.

Do Video Games Harm or Help Younger Audiences?

Story Highlight
  • Games are both beneficial and harmful to the youth.
  • They help with decision-making and cognitive skills but can also lead to addiction and poor performance at school.
  • Regulating screentime and moderating activities can help protect the youth from gaming’s drawbacks.

Gaming is a popular hobby for millions of people out there, with the industry projected to grow further in the coming years, thanks to titles like GTA 6. However, despite their popularity, many still believe games do more harm than good.

At a time when bias runs wild and writers sometimes present opinions from platforms such as Speedy paper writing service, it can be difficult to understand both sides of the argument. To make matters clear, let’s discuss how gaming impacts the youth of today.

Why it matters: Younger audiences are the target of titles like Fortnite and Roblox. These games boast the biggest player bases and make billions of dollars each year.

What The Science Says

PlayStation Nintendo
Scientists Are Still Split On Gaming As A Hobby For Younger Audiences

It’s no secret that many trials and tests have been conducted to determine the impact of games on children and teenagers. Studies have found that different types of games have varying impacts on people.

For instance, sandbox adventures may help individuals improve their planning, while puzzle games may sharpen visual speed briefly. Cooperative experiences also seem to instill a sense of empathy within the players, indicating that gaming does far more than just hurt a person.

Cognitive Gains In Studies

Studies support the idea that games help improve cognitive skills. As an example, action game players are likely to have better peripheral attention due to following many moving targets, and strategy fans are expected to be better at arithmetic reasoning and forward planning.

In fact, a study from three years ago revealed that steadily playing games could raise visual-spatial scores by nine points on average, roughly equaling one semester of art instruction.

Unfortunately, these gains may not necessarily show up for everyone, particularly in cases where players log extreme hours across different games.

Risks And Concerns

Microtransaction Prices
Engaging With Microtransactions Can Lead To Gambling

The risks associated with games need no introduction and have been well documented for several years.

For starters, excessive playtime can lead to lost sleep, motion sickness, and lack of focus. Too much time spent on gaming can even contribute to serious health issues and weaker performance at school.

Exposure to violence can cause tense muscles and spikes in heart rate, potentially leaving severe impressions on young audiences. Moreover, online gameplay can present problems like harassment, bullying, and privacy loss.

At the same time, gaming’s larger microtransaction problem with mechanics like loot boxes and battle passes holds the potential to lead younger minds down the path of gambling and addictions.

School Performance And Screen-Time Limits

Limiting screen time is one potential solution to concerns regarding the harmful impacts of gaming.

Encouraging students and younger gamers to finish tasks like chores and homework before spending an hour or two on games is typically seen as a positive activity. Here, the brain releases dopamine as a reward for a productive activity rather than as a replacement.

The role of parents is paramount here since they can govern how kids and teenagers engage with games on a daily basis. Precautions like small breaks while gaming, keeping track of time, and trusting rating boards are a wise move when attempting to limit the downsides of the activity.

Moreover, parents can actively protect their children from online harassment and toxic strangers, creating a safe environment for gamers of all ages.

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, one clear answer does not exist on the matter. Studies are still being conducted to determine how games impact the youth, both positively and negatively.

With games constantly evolving and new laws being put in place, these studies are also being adjusted to suit different nations and people. Researchers and scientists ultimately hope to find how gaming affects one’s career, relationships, mental health, and behaviors.

Games, like anything else, come with their fair share of positives and negatives. While moderately engaging with the hobby can help the youth polish various skills, excessive gaming can also be quite harmful in the long run. Therefore, a moderate approach is best to reap the benefits of playing games.

The icing on the cake comes from a solid resume and an impressive portfolio. Landing a job in the industry can also be made easier through networking opportunities provided by attending various events and expos for game development.

All in all, the game development journey is an extensive one, but with enough effort, enthusiasts looking to break into the industry can thrive in their dream jobs.

How Devs Can Launch The Perfect Indie Beta Test

Story Highlight
  • Beta testing is an incredible tool for indie developers when used correctly.
  • Utilizing proxy servers, ensuring game stability, and incorporating feedback are essential during the testing period.
  • A positive test can boost a game’s popularity in the long run.

Indie gaming is on the rise, with many industry legends recognizing its importance for the future of the industry. This genre of gaming offers a wide range of experiences, and early-access releases are among the most popular among gamers.

It’s always a great idea to gather feedback before fully launching a game, so developers should consider this option and ensure they take care throughout the beta period to make the process as seamless as possible.

Why it matters: Early access games are slowly gaining popularity since developers, now more than ever, attempt to listen to their communities.

Leverage Proxy Server

VPN
Proxy Services Can Be A Huge Help For A New Game

A major part of the indie beta testing process is the proxy server. Top proxy providers today offer enormous global networks of millions of IP addresses across hundreds of countries, giving small studios the freedom to test connectivity and performance at a large scale.

Proxies also help with data gathering and QA by allowing safe web scraping and analytics collection. For instance, proxies can help collect market data or track how a particular game looks on different regional storefronts.

It’s no secret that many indie teams run on a tight budget, so free online proxy services can be a lifesaver by helping these teams avoid massive investments in global testing infrastructure.

A service like WebShare provides 10 premium proxies per account (fully anonymous and maintained for high performance and security). Such services also bring rotating residential proxies to the table for broader testing needs.

This makes it so that even teams with limited budgets can ensure their beta test covers diverse locations and network scenarios without breaking the bank.

Verify Game Stability And Performance

Joel meme The Last of Us Part 1 PC Port
Nobody Likes A Broken Game

For the best results, developers must take care to ensure their game is stable and in a functioning state. Beta testing should follow an internal alpha phase or heavy in-house QA, with experts believing a game should be 90-95% complete before beta testing.

Evidently, this type of test should be more focused on polishing and feedback implementation rather than basic stability. If a game is too broken, it may even frustrate the players and completely backfire.

As mentioned earlier, alpha testing or playing the game within the studio is the best approach to avoid such a scenario. It’s also a good idea to set performance targets like crash-free percentages.

Recruit Beta Testers

Despite obvious budget concerns, spending money on a skilled and diverse group of testers is extremely important.

In this context, diversity refers to people of different skill levels, playstyles, and system configurations. Sticking with such players can lead to teams discovering 40% more issues early on due to the unpredictability of such teams.

Using social media, indie forums, and other websites like Reddit is a good idea in this instance. Some developers have also shown that Steam pages can be used to gather interested players effectively.

Ideally, a team should consider 500-2000 testers. However, the results can be solid, even with a smaller number of testers.

Quickly Address Feedback

It goes without saying, but listening to the community and testers is important. Equally important is implementing feedback regularly and quickly.

Developers need to stay on top of the community’s wishes and have plans in place for regular patches or bug fixes. Elsewhere, teams must have their priorities set to address the biggest problems first.

Catching problems in the beta phase is always better than rushing out patches post-release, so this period is extremely important for all types of games. Moreover, incorporating player feedback can even lead to positive word of mouth, which can then bring in more players to the game.

Based on what players enjoy, feedback can range from minor difficulty adjustments to weapon rebalancing. Ultimately, it’s wise to remember that appealing to the players is the key to success.

Helldivers 2 Xbox Port Was All Sony’s Decision, Says Arrowhead Dev

Story Highlight
  • An Arrowhead developer has revealed that the decision to port Helldivers 2 to Xbox was all PlayStation’s.
  • He further reveals that this is one of the coolest things the gaming giant has done.
  • The game is set to release on 20th August for Xbox.

The Helldivers 2 Xbox port was announced a little while ago, and it shocked the fandom quite a bit. Following that, a job posting was spotted, revealing that Sony is opting for the multiplatform strategy, adding fuel to the fire.

That said, fans have been wondering whose decision it was to bring the game to Xbox. As revealed by developer Arrowhead, the decision was made by Sony. This means that Arrowhead had little to no intervention.

Why it matters: This port made many skeptical whether Sony would release more games on the rival console, so fans wanted answers regarding whose decision it was.

This news comes directly from a developer at Arrowhead on Discord. The developer revealed that the whole decision to bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox was PlayStation’s, so fans should thank them.

It was all PlayStation. Send them your thanks! We were all in support of course.

-Shams Jorjani

An Xbox fan on the Discord was praising Arrowhead for bringing the game to the console. However, Jorjani was quick to clarify the situation and gave all the credit to Sony. While the developer was, of course, in support of Helldivers 2 heading to more platforms, the final decision was solely based on Sony’s judgment.

Jorjani further said that this is one of the coolest things they have done, so it seems like the developer is pretty happy with the outcome.

This may come as a surprise, as developers often ask the publishers to launch their game on other platforms. Silent Hill 2 Remake can be taken as an example, as Bloober Team convinced Konami to release the game on the PC platform as well.

Furthermore, the Stellar Blade developer also had to convince Sony to remove the PSN restrictions from Steam so every single fan could enjoy the game. There is still no confirmation whether the gaming giant aims to release more games on the platform, but for now, fans can enjoy Helldivers 2 on Xbox on 20th August

How Modern Operating Systems Transform Companies Through Software

Story Highlight
  • Modern operating systems serve as fundamental building blocks of growing companies.
  • They streamline processes, provide security, and allow seamless integration of new technology.
  • Operating systems also drive innovation across the industry.

Software is at the heart of everything today, but with innovations in key areas like AI and cloud services, it can be too easy to ignore the component that sits at the core of it all, the operating system.

An operating system is central to everything computers do today, acting as the nervous system of the entire PC. The modern OS essentially fuels efficiency for companies, completely transforming how they work.

Why it matters: Operating systems like Windows and Android are used by nearly every single person on the planet today, but these just scratch the surface of what an OS can do.

Efficiency Through Intelligent System Integration

Windows 10
An OS Can Be A lot More Complex Than The Standard Windows

Intelligent system integration allows modern operating systems to get the most out of all resources available.

For a company, this means connecting departments like accounting, sales, and customer service through one seamless network for better communication, less repetition, and faster decision-making.

To achieve this level of intelligence, comprehensive software suites, such as Zoho One Services, are directly embedded in the operating system itself. Such integrated platforms serve a variety of functions, ranging from CRM to project management to HR tools.

Elsewhere, operating systems can assist companies through automation. The software itself can perform mundane tasks like archiving documents and sending reminders.

Security And Scalability

Because practically everything a company does today is recorded on a computer, the OS itself usually serves as the first line of defense by offering features like encryption and strict access controls.

Meanwhile, flexibility is yet another benefit that comes with the modern OS. They are designed with growing businesses and companies in mind, allowing for the addition of new users or the integration of cloud technology.

Innovation and Competitiveness

Gaming Industry Layoffs
The Right OS Can Breed Innovation

Because the modern OS is highly flexible, it allows companies to innovate and integrate new ideas into the system quickly. New technologies can be related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, or even advanced data analytics.

In turn, this can prove highly valuable when working with large data sets and attempting to optimize different processes. Furthermore, many operating systems play an essential role in the open source movement.

Open source systems benefit from a global community of developers who are constantly working on improvements and new features. As a result, the constant development of these systems allows companies to stay ahead of the curve and adapt to market changes.

Final Thoughts

Modern operating systems are essential for all companies today, but setting them up is no ordinary task, and this is where specialized IT service providers play a key role in the industry.

Partners like Codafish offer customized solutions that strategically support companies with operating systems that seamlessly integrate into existing processes. Tasks like migrating to the cloud, ensuring the highest security standards, and implementing complex AI applications can all be taken care of through such partners.

Ultimately, the modern OS is a tool that, when harnessed to its full extent, can completely change the fate of a business.
