“Two Puzzle Pieces That Fit So Well Together!”

Story Highlights
  • Indiana Jones and The Great Circle received its first trailer today.
  • MachineGames believes it is the perfect match for an Indiana Jones game.
  • Many developers at the studio are fans of Indy, grew up watching his movies, and have done their best to continue his legacy.

Nearly three years after its official announcement, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was finally shown for the first time at Xbox Developer Direct earlier today.

The game offers first-person gameplay, large areas to explore, and an immersive gameplay loop that fulfills the fantasy of Indy’s adventurous journeys. What makes the game even more compelling is MachineGames’ dedication to the character. The studio believes it is the perfect match for Indiana Jones.

Why it matters: Many have been doubtful of this choice since MachineGames is primarily a first-person games studio. However, this approach to Indiana Jones opens up the possibility for the action-adventure game to stand out in a somewhat saturated market.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

Following the Xbox Developer Direct, Bethesda released a blog discussing Indiana Jones and The Great Circle with the Senior Animator Rebecca Elfstrm Hiden, who highlighted why this team is such a great pick for the project. The developer stated:

“We have big, sometimes crazy ideas that seem insane on paper, but they meshed really well with the franchise.”

The Senior Animator claims Indiana Jones and MachineGames are two pieces of the same puzzle. This made the team enthusiastic about the game, allowing it to pour the project with love and dedication. Rebecca Elfstrm Hiden also said:

“Our DNA and the pillars of Indiana Jones just came together so naturally.”

Game director Jerk Gustafsson chimed in with his own perspective on the project, claiming that most of MachineGames’ developers grew up watching Indy and fell in love with his movies and character.

He explained that Indiana Jones was relatable even for those who didn’t grow up with his stories. This is exactly why the team is so invested in honoring his legacy and offering a faithful adaptation through their first game since 2019.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

While the decision to use first-person gameplay has proven to be a bit controversial, Design Director Jens Andersson explained that this choice will lead to greater immersion in all elements.

Overall, MachineGames has tried its best to deliver a game that appeals to both new and old Indy fans.

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle launches in 2024. While Xbox’s 2024 lineup was already quite compelling before this announcement, MachineGames’ release might go down as the best first-party title from the gaming giant this year.
