Helldivers 2 was launched on both PC and PlayStation. As a co-op shooter, it quickly became popular on PC despite existing games like Call of Duty and Counter-Strike. This title also stayed among Steam’s best-sellers after its launch for many weeks.
Even after two months, the game was reaching 340K players on Steam. While it was reported that sales showed a nearly 50/50 split between PS5 and PC, it seems the latter now has twice as many active players today.
Why it matters: Recent events have sparked discussions about Sony’s future on PC, with various fans claiming that the decision to focus too much on this platform was a mistake after the strong reaction from the community.

Helldivers 2 shows the number of online players in-game, and fans noted that it had over 162K active players at one point. Looking at the Steam data, it was reported that 111K of those came from PC alone.
Meanwhile, PS5 contributed around 50K players, giving the former a lead by more than twice as many players. One reason for this difference may be the fact that shooters are best played with a mouse and keyboard.
PC gamers are also typically more fond of this genre. The data suggests that most PS5 users have moved on, while the audience from Steam continues to return to Helldivers 2 repeatedly.
This example illustrates just how important PC gaming is for PlayStation’s future and why the gaming giant was willing to accept this community’s recent demands.
Because PC gaming is so lucrative for live-service games, Sony will continue to explore the market.
