- Gears of War: E-Day is facing backlash after the involvement of consultancy firm Hit Detection was found.
- One of the consultants also recently admitted to sexual assault.
- The Coalition has also been accused of taking political stances.
Gears of War: E-Day is shaping up to be one of Xbox’s best exclusives in a long time. The game hit double the player count of Gears 5 on Steam just in early access, but it’s also facing a bunch of backlash now.
It was recently found that The Coalition has worked with a controversial consultancy firm called Hit Detection for Gears of War: E-Day. It is the same company previously involved with advisory work on the Silent Hill 2 remake and multiple other AAA titles.
Why it matters: Gamers are now cancelling their orders of the game online after discovering these controversies, which could also hurt E-Day’s overall reception after launch.
As reported by @Pirat_Nation on Twitter, one of the consultants at the company, Jacob Geller, admitted to having committed sexual assault during his college days, which has further fanned the flames of this controversy.
Jacob is the same controversial figure who once said the ‘world would be better without gamers.’ Hit Detection’s advisory work in other games has also faced retaliation from gamers in the past.
Regardless, The Coalition was also accused of taking political stances in the game, such as not letting gamers use “Trump” for the Gamer Tag while other political figures are allowed. There’s also a huge variety of pride flags in E-Day, which offended many gamers online.
To this, Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski shot back with claims the series has always included political and social themes, citing some examples of rather dark elements. He argues that queer characters and ‘strong women’ are not something new in E-Day.
Many gamers have now cancelled their copies of E-Day after discovering these elements, but it’s unclear if this protest will hurt the game’s performance.
