- Modded PS5 consoles can now run PS3 discs using the RPS5S3 emulator.
- This emulator is based on the popular RPCS3 emulator, and it can even support external disc drives for PS5 Digital Edition consoles.
- It wasn’t long ago that PS2 discs also became playable on the PS5 through a similar method.
PS5 modding has come a long way over the years, and recently, modders have managed to run PS2 games via emulation through discs on the console.
While this was already shocking enough, the latest development showcases the same process with PS3 discs, making PS3 games playable directly through the PS5’s disc drive.
Why it matters: Many hoped to see full PS3 backwards compatibility for the PS5, but the complexity of the console’s Cell architecture has prevented Sony from attempting an official solution. Rumors regarding PS3 backwards compatibility also spread like wildlife over the last few years.
First PS2 discs. Now PS3 discs.
The PS5 is slowly becoming the PlayStation it should've been. 🎮Sony gave us five generations of PlayStation,

Sword, the same modder who demonstrated PS2 games running on the PS5, has returned with a video showcasing PS3 emulation on the PS5. The modder shows Gran Turismo 5 running on the console directly from the game disc.
This has been accomplished using the RPCS3 emulator, which has been ported to jailbroken PS5 systems. Like PS2 discs, PS3 discs can also be run via an external drive on PS5 Digital Edition consoles.
Modder Sword says that the PS5’s disc drive is capable of reading discs across all five PlayStation generations, so the latest developments regarding backwards compatibility have been quite interesting to see.

Perhaps PlayStation even had plans to support all previous generations of hardware at some point during the PS5’s development.
