- Ex-PlayStation boss Shawn Layden says shorter 20-25 hour games can offer a better experience than stretched-out 100-hour titles.
- He argues that many lengthier titles don’t always offer the most quality throughout the experience.
- This is also not the first time the former PlayStation head has called for a focus on shorter titles.
It’s no secret that modern games are more bloated than ever before, and many feel this is something that should not be the case. As the AA and AAA games industry continues to showcase its talents, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden argues that there should be a focus on 20-25 hour games.
Why it matters: The games industry also faces a budget and timeline problem at the moment, so a shift to shorter titles would solve many of its problems.
Shawn Layden, the former PlayStation head, has once again pushed back against the idea that bigger games are always better.
During a recent podcast, Layden said he prefers strong 20-25 hour games over padded-out 100-hour releases, arguing that those extended runtimes are not always filled with quality content.
He also notes that following this type of template can help bring costs down while ensuring games deliver a consistent level of quality throughout their runtime.
I would rather see a world where we have good 20 to 25 hour games that are just action-packed.

As mentioned earlier, this is not the first time Shawn Layden has pushed back against games becoming bigger and bigger.
Recent game releases like Wolverine also highlight how developers are now beginning to focus on shorter experiences, though audiences remain split on longer versus shorter AAA titles.
