Story Highlight
  • Over 30 million people tuned in to watch the GTA 6 extended gameplay reveal on Netflix.
  • The showcase topped the English-language film chart in 87 countries tracked by the streaming platform.
  • GTA 6 also saw a huge surge in pre-orders following the showcase, with PS5 sales increasing by 606%.

Following the gameplay showcase on Netflix, the hype for GTA 6 has gone through the roof. The title has sent shockwaves through the entire industry, with even Hollywood studios now worried about the loss of box office gross because of the game.

Despite receiving criticism early on for debuting the showcase on Netflix, Rockstar has come out of the partnership with a big spike in GTA 6 pre-orders. As it turns out, the extended reveal was an even bigger hit for Netflix and brought in a lot of new eyeballs to the streaming service.

Why it matters: Despite doubts around this marketing strategy, it seems like this first-of-its-kind showcase might become a norm for the industry moving forward.

GTA 6 Netflix
The showcase on Netflix has massively benefited both companies.

According to Netflix, the GTA 6 extended reveal was viewed by 31.1 million users on the streaming service. The gameplay showcase topped the English film lists after its debut, reaching the No. 1 spot in 87 out of the 93 countries tracked by Netflix.

Considering how the Netflix mobile app crashed on the day of the reveal due to a 50% increase in users, these numbers make complete sense. According to Sensor Tower, GTA 6 brought in a lot of new sign-ups to the platform, increasing viewership by a whopping 35% during the showcase.

On the other hand, Rockstar also benefited massively from the collaboration, with PS5 pre-orders of GTA 6 surging by 606% after the extended reveal premiered on Netflix. Overall, the game saw sales increase by over 500%, in addition to the alleged $100 million that Netflix paid the company for an exclusivity window.

GTA 6
The Rockstar title has become the hottest entertainment product in the world after the gameplay showcase.

Therefore, the partnership has worked in the best interests of both companies, with GTA 6 performing better than most films on Netflix. With the PS5 Pro also selling out around the globe thanks to the hype around the open-world title, the ripple effects of GTA 6 are being felt through the entire entertainment landscape.

Do you think other companies should use the Netflix method for gameplay showcases from now on? Can any other title bring in viewers to the platform like GTA 6 did? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
