- Sony has quietly updated the PS5 Slim hardware in a new revision, featuring a refreshed motherboard design.
- The refresh comes with a replaceable CR2032 battery, a redesigned internal layout, and a revised cooling system.
- The heatsink construction and material are also noticeably different than the previous revisions.
Sony has revised its PS5 lineup over the years with newer models featuring improved cooling and internal designs. The PS5 Slim model CFI-2116 last year practically made the console’s sound nonexistent and fixed the liquid metal spillage issues with upgraded thermals.
The company has now silently updated the PS5 Slim hardware once again in a minor revision that is far from a visual refresh. The new PS5 Slim Wolverine Limited Edition comes with a refreshed EDM-051 motherboard.
It comes with an entirely different motherboard layout and an overall simplified internal configuration. The new model also makes it much easier to replace the CMOS battery by moving it to the outer shell, which was one of the biggest dilemmas with the previous iterations.
Why it matters: Sony continues to silently revise PS5 console hardware to improve system longevity, such as by upgrading thermal design. These revisions tackle liquid metal spillage and overheating problems that have been reported over the years.

As discovered by console and controller technician @Modyfikator89 on Twitter, arguably the biggest PS5 Slim upgrade is the revised cooling system, featuring a liquid metal containment that seems more similar to the PS5 Pro variant.
This is not just the same Slim with a different shell.

The revised interface offers better protection that reportedly exposes less area directly to the liquid metal. It should help keep the liquid metal better controlled around the APU.
Additionally, the revision features a noticeably different heatsink construction and material compared to earlier Slim variants. There’s also an HDMI retimer implementation that is apparently cheaper and more optimized.

For some odd reason, Sony has not officially announced the changes with the refresh. Even the manual that comes with the revision features older documentation for now.
The improved hardware might make the consoles last longer, but it won’t improve performance by any noticeable margins.
