- 1666: Amsterdam is removing generative AI material after online criticism.
- Patrice Désilets, best known as the creator of Assassin’s Creed, acknowledged the issue and apologized.
- The developer also stated that generative AI was mostly used earlier during the game’s development.
The Assassin’s Creed creator, Patrice Désilets, has most recently worked on 1666: Amsterdam as part of Panache Games.
1666: Amsterdam is now available in early access, but the game’s release has become completely overshadowed by a controversy surrounding generative AI. Following mass criticism, Patrice Désilets has promised to avoid using the technology in the future.
Why it matters: The games industry remains mixed on generative AI usage, with the public seemingly being completely against the technology.
1666: Amsterdam, the action-adventure project from Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets, is dropping generative AI material after criticism from fans and industry observers.
According to Insider Gaming, Désilets confirmed that AI-generated assets connected to 1666: Amsterdam will be replaced following backlash over their use. As per the developer, AI was mostly used early on in the game’s development.
He says that it was utilized in pre-production, but due to the fans’ response, the team will refrain from using AI altogether moving forward.
Yes, we use some AI in the process, mostly at the beginning. We won’t be using AI anymore.

Of course, the fan reaction isn’t too shocking, considering many weren’t fond of discovering AI-generated assets in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and other games. As mentioned earlier, a lot of fans are still not sold on generative AI yet, and it doesn’t help that impressive games like GTA 6 were made completely without AI.
