Use of generative AI in game development has been a huge topic of debate. Some companies and studios like PlayStation are now openly embracing it, while others have a stricter view of its use in development.

A former BioWare employee is one of the non-believers, as he said that the use of generative AI in game development is a “plague”, and it shouldn’t be adopted as widely as the current industry is doing right now.

Why it matters: Many people claim that using the tech for development and generating assets is lazy and boring work. Others also oppose it as it essentially copies what already exists, kind of plagiarizing content.

Bioware vet says using gen AI for game development should be treated like a plague

Talking to GamesRadar, former Dragon Age narrative lead David Gaider revealed his thoughts on generative AI in game development. He said he is not fond of it, and the industry shouldn’t be either.

Until the people making decisions regarding its use finally realize that it’s not the source of cheap labour replacement they want it to be, it should be treated like the virulent plague it is.

He said the tech copies from existing data, which is morally wrong to use

Gaider said that the models essentially train on existing stuff, and what they generate can create future legal issues, so it’s morally wrong to use. He said the tech should only be used as an assistant rather than the lead.

He continued that, unfortunately, the industry is going the opposite direction, using AI as the lead, and leaving humans to clean up. It is a plague for the gaming industry, and should be treated that way.
