But He Doubts That This Should Be The Path Forward!

Story Highlight
  • CDPR CEO says fully AI-generated games are closer to release than we think.
  • He talked to an AI-based studio that is going to release a game really soon.
  • Nowakowski said the end product might be decent, but this shouldn’t be the future.

Ever since generative AI took over, whether it should be implemented in game development has been a huge debate. It can help accelerate certain steps during development, but in the end, it can’t replicate what humans do.

Amid all this, CD Projekt Red’s joint-CEO has revealed that fully AI-generated games are on the way. He has talked to AI-based studios, and they have confirmed it. However, he has doubts if that should be the future.

Why it matters: Gen AI content is famously called “AI slop”, so making full games through the tech doesn’t seem like a good idea. Fans are fine with it helping in expediting development, but that’s about it.

CDPR CEO says that fully AI-generated games are coming

Talking to Edge’s Knowledge Newsletter, Michał Nowakowski has revealed that AI-generated games are coming, as he has talked to some AI-based studios. They can pump out games at unprecedented speeds, but is that the future?

Nowakowski said that one of the studio owners told him that they can prepare 40 prototypes within a week, and that he can prepare full games within a week, and also launch one of those quite soon.

Fans aren’t even accepting of gen AI assets in gaming

The CEO debates that maybe they might even turn out to be good; however, he doesn’t think that this is the path the industry should follow. Manual development does take time, but it also creates magic that AI just can’t.

Even now, when studios use placeholder assets, you can clearly tell based on inconsistencies that they are AI-generated. So, while we might get AI games in the future, they won’t be satisfactory for the audience.
