YMTC Wants To Dethrone And Replace Samsung As The World’s No. 1 NAND Maker By 2027

Factory Expansion Plans to Double Output!

Story Highlight
  • YMTC aims to overtake Samsung as the global NAND leader by late 2027, increasing its market share from 14% to over 25%.
  • High AI storage demand and competitors shifting focus to DRAM create a strong opening for YMTC.
  • The planned public listing will finance major factory upgrades and tech development.

China has decided to challenge the established leaders of the global NAND flash memory industry. Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. (YMTC), one of the country’s leading flash memory manufacturers, is reportedly aiming to become the world’s largest NAND producer by the end of 2027, a target that would put it ahead of industry giants Samsung and SK hynix in just 16 months.

To reach this goal, YMTC has been rapidly expanding its memory productivity for years. Beginning with around 14% of NAND bits supplied in the second quarter of 2026, it would need to reach or exceed Samsung’s present 25% market share in just over a year.

DRAM memory

The situation is partially in their favor as Samsung is focusing on capacity for higher-margin DRAM products, while the expansion of data centers and AI inference is increasing demand for enterprise storage. In fact, enterprise SSDs accounted for around 48% of all NAND bits delivered globally in the second quarter, up significantly from 26% the previous year.

YMTC plans to fund a large portion of this growth through its first public offering (IPO), which aims to raise around $4.9 billion. Approximately two-thirds of this money would be utilized to update and expand its production lines, with the remaining going into research and development of sophisticated technologies. The company intends to issue between 1.98 billion and 2.43 billion new shares, accounting for about 10-12% of its capital following the offering.

In the first quarter of 2026, YMTC recorded $7 billion in revenue. Its gross margin is expected to rise from 5.45% in 2023 to 35.3% in 2025, and then to an incredible 76.77% in the first quarter of 2026, with its factories running at 98.02% capacity. However, behind these figures lies a tremendous investment: the company has spent $14.345 billion on capital expenditures for long-term assets and $2.375 billion on R&D.

YMTC Semiconductor The fundamental key is production capacity. YMTC already has two plants in Wuhan, each capable of generating around 200,000 wafers each month. However, the company is now commissioning a third facility and aims to build two more. When fully operational, each of these new facilities can produce approximately 100,000 wafers per month, more than doubling the manufacturer’s current output. The third factory will gradually scale up production, with a projected capacity of 50,000 wafers per month by 2027.

This expansion is precisely what is beginning to concern the rest of the sector. While the market is currently suffering from shortages and high prices due to AI demand, new Chinese manufacturers could add significant capacity by 2027. If Samsung, SK Hynix, Kioxia, Micron, and SanDisk continue to invest in NAND flash, the market may shift from shortage to surplus, putting downward pressure on prices. YMTC would also be in a particularly aggressive position due to Chinese financial backing and an increasingly nationalized supply chain.

This will make China a major threat to the rest of the industry. Flooding the market with memory will drive down memory prices, and the industry does not want that to happen. They are happy with the current state of the global memory shortage, which has led them to accumulate record revenues.
