The memory crisis has created a lot of uncertainty around next-gen consoles. Both Xbox Helix and PS6 are expected to cost more than $1,000 thanks to component shortages. With the PS6 also expected to launch with 30GB of RAM, this price tag seems more plausible with every passing day.
Many reports have indicated that Sony could even push the release date of next-gen hardware further ahead in a bid to wait out the memory crisis and bring prices down. Now, the latest comments from Sony’s boss suggest that this could be the strategy the company will follow.
Why it matters: With analysts predicting that $1,000 consoles are the only certainty about the upcoming generation, delaying the PS6 might be the best possible idea.
In a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki stated that the company still hasn’t decided on a release date for PS6 internally. Totoki briefly touched on the component shortages plaguing the entire gaming industry, saying that if Sony doesn’t take action soon enough, it won’t survive in the current industry climate.
With rising memory prices plaguing the hardware industry, the Sony CEO also emphasized the importance of other media in the interview, saying that the company is focusing on its wider entertainment business, including games, movies, music, and anime.
This does fall in line with the gaming giant’s rhetoric, as it previously declared that the PS6 won’t be rushed out to compete with Xbox Helix and that Sony will judge market conditions. Hiroki Totoki also voiced a similar opinion in May, saying that the company wants to proceed carefully with PS6 as memory prices are only going to rise next year.
Considering how Sony has also specified that the PS5 is only halfway through its lifecycle, a PS6 delay beyond 2027 only seems more likely thanks to the component shortages.
