Sony Plans To Expand PS5 Life Cycle, Says Its Only In The Middle

The PS6 Might Not Arrive Until 2029.

Story Highlight
  • In its new financial report, Sony has announced it plans to expand the PS5 generation.
  • According to the Japanese giant, the console is still in the middle of its journey.
  • This also indicates that the PS6 won’t be launching until 2029.

There has been a lot of debate regarding when the next-gen consoles will launch, with both Xbox and PlayStation keeping their plans private. Xbox has at least hinted that its upcoming hardware is going to be a PC/console hybrid.

However, Sony has been quiet about the PS6, with information only coming from insiders, who believe that the console will be half the price of the new Xbox. The Japanese giant has finally opened up about its next-gen plans, and from the looks of it, we might have to wait a while.

Why It Matters: Extending the PS5 generation is a risky decision from Sony, as the technical power of the console can become obsolete.

Sony’s PS5 Pro is expected to carry the generation to 2029.

While talking about its Q2 finances for Fiscal Year 2026, Sony CFO Lin Tao revealed that the company plans to extend the life cycle of the PS5. The CFO stated that Sony believes PlayStation 5 is only in the middle of its journey and will continue to expand it further.

We believe the PS5 is only in the middle of the journey, and plan to expand it even further.

Tao reiterated that many active users are enjoying the console, and because of this, Sony doesn’t see a reason to stop soon. This info does line up with what insiders have previously stated about a late 2029 launch for next-gen hardware.

The release of the PS5 Pro also plays a hand in this decision, according to previous reports, as its hardware capacity can support this current-gen until 2029. And, with the standard console also performing brilliantly for AAA titles, Sony’s decision does make sense.

The Japanese giant is already planning to support the console with big names like Marvel’s Wolverine and Saros, as well as third-party ventures like GTA 6, which will give the PlayStation 5 a late surge in 2026

Sony is planning to support the generation with AAA titles like Wolverine.

With the development of the new Xbox proceeding at full steam, it will be interesting to see which brand releases its console first and eclipses the technical problems of the current-gen.
