Capcom Isn’t Concerned By Physical Disc Cancellation; Says It Won’t Leave Huge Impact

Capcom Is Seemingly All For A Digital Only Future!

Story Highlight
  • Capcom appears unfazed by the possibility of a more disc-free console market.
  • This is because digital game sales now account for over 90% of Capcom’s business.
  • The gaming giant seems to be neutral on PlayStation’s disc cancellation, showing no concerns for the time being.

PlayStation is cancelling the production of physical games as the market transitions to a digital-only future. The gaming giant is even including disclaimers on the boxes of new PS5 consoles that 2028 will mark the end of disc production.

Amid the chaos, Capcom has shared its stance on the matter, noting that its business should continue moving forward at the same pace.

Why it matters: Capcom is one of the industry’s biggest third-party publishers at the moment. The gaming giant’s lack of interest in the physical market shows exactly why PlayStation decided to move on from discs.

Despite the audience reactions to PlayStation’s physical disc cancellation, Capcom does not appear especially concerned by the inevitability of physical discs becoming less important in the console market.

When asked to share its thoughts on this announcement in a recent Q&A, Capcom simply responded that its digital share is as large as 90% of all sales. This is why the gaming giant isn’t too concerned about the shrinking physical market, and as a result, PlayStation’s cancellation.

We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time.

Of course, Capcom will continue supporting physical discs as long as PlayStation is on board with the idea. This could mean that Resident Evil Veronica will be the last entry in the series to launch on a disc, at least on PlayStation hardware.
