AAA game development is getting more expensive and time-consuming, and even well-established studios like Capcom are feeling the ripple effects. Many studios are now turning to implementing AI into game development and game engines to keep up.
Capcom has now announced it will transform the RE Engine into an “AI-Generation game engine” in the future via incremental upgrades to streamline game development. It is part of Capcom’s new ethos to ‘create games together with AI.’
Why it matters: Capcom has previously opposed using AI-generated assets in games. While that stance might have changed, AI implementation in RE Engine will likely only focus on streamlining development and improving mundane, time-consuming processes.

As reported by Japanese publication Game Biz, Capcom executive and programmer Satoshi Ishida announced the planned AI integration into the RE Engine during the ‘Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026’ on October 2, 2026.
Instead of creating a new AI-based engine from scratch, Capcom intends to improve the RE Engine via the new REX initiative.
It is a multi-step improvement plan to unify the game engine under the ‘world’s most common programming language,’ making it easier to use for humans and for AI to understand. The AI will reportedly be able to understand and write new programs, conduct play tests, and check for bugs.
Ishida reported some major challenges that Capcom is facing. AAA games have become so huge that even simple processes take a long time, and larger development teams require an engine that’s easy for everyone to use, for example.

So, integrating AI into workflows is essential to streamline development for the next generation of AAA gaming. The REX plan will solve these problems by improving aspects like the engine’s efficiency, performance, tools, quality assurance, and the like.
Do you think Capcom’s future RE Engine projects will be negatively affected by relying too much on AI, or are these concerns just a nothingburger? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
