Do PS6 and Xbox Helix Need Disc Drives? Capcom Reports 93% Digital Game Sales

Expert Verified By

The Future Looks All-Digital!

Story Highlight
  • Capcom has reported that over 93% of its game sales have now become digital.
  • This clearly suggests that the PS6 and Xbox Helix could ship without the disc drive.
  • This could also help them keep costs down amid the huge memory crisis.

The debate of whether digital games will take over physical games has heated up once again. The latter has fallen to a new low, where multiple companies have reported that a huge majority of their game sales are now only digital.

Capcom is now the latest studio to release its financial report, and has revealed that 93% of its game sales are now digital. This suggests the upcoming PS6 and Xbox Project Helix will indeed likely launch without disc drives.

Why it matters: The ownership of digital games has always been a big question, as many platforms have claimed that they are just licenses that can be revoked anytime, so you don’t really own the games you pay for.

However, despite this, it seems we are headed towards a completely digital future. Capcom has reported 93% of its game sales are digital. Even PlayStation and Square Enix have announced similar sales trends.

Also, according to a recent report, Xbox is preparing something called Project Positron that aims to convert physical games into digital licenses for the Helix. Even PlayStation 6 is rumored to be an all-digital console.

The next-gen consoles will likely ship without disc drives

The sales figures give a good reason for companies to get rid of the disc drive for good. However, if the PS6 goes digital, it will likely sell a separate drive like the PS5 Pro. Anyhow, the next-gen consoles aren’t too far away now.
