- Three PS5 emulators are currently in development, with all three making varying levels of progress.
- SharpEmu has shown a lot of potential, running a 2D platformer and booting Demon’s Souls Remake recently.
- PlayStation’s physical disc cancellation has led to even more rapid progress in this department.
Over a week after the initial announcement, the frustration following PlayStation’s physical disc decision is no longer as intense. Where fans were once threatening to leave the ecosystem or boycott PS Plus, many seem to have moved on from the topic.
However, it appears the subject has lit a fire in the emulation community. Following this announcement, rapid and unexpected progress has now been made on PS5 emulation.
Why it matters: All prior PlayStation consoles can currently be emulated on PC, and with the ongoing progress, the PS5 could be next.

The emulator in question is dubbed SharpEmu, and according to reports on Twitter/X, it is already running the 2D platformer Dreaming Sarah.
Moreover, it is said that the emulator is able to boot Demon’s Souls Remake, although the game doesn’t go much further than the initial splash screen. Another PS5 emulator, Kyty, is also in the works at the moment.
Kyty has been in development for a few years at this point, and similarly, RPCSX marks a third in-development emulator that has shown potential. For now, this emulator is limited to launching PS5’s safe mode and test samples.
All three emulators are still a work in progress, but these projects, specifically SharpEmu, are said to be making rapid progress. In particular, PlayStation’s decision to get rid of physical discs has motivated the community to pick up the pace.
The scenario appears similar to the time when ShadPS4 made rapid progress a few years back due to the community’s motivation to bring Bloodborne to PC.

It will be interesting to see, then, whether PS5 emulation develops as rapidly as PS4’s did in the last few years. This would also be significant since PlayStation is now moving on from PC ports.
