PlayStation Aims To Release At Least One Big Single Player Game Each Year

There Can Be Multiple Major First-Party Releases Each Year!

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation 5 has fewer exclusives than both of its previous generations.
  • The company seems to acknowledge that, as it aims to release at least one tentpole game every year.
  • Hermen Huslt said at least one, so there is a possibility of multiple big single-player game releases in a year.

The PlayStation 5 has officially turned five just a couple of days ago, and on this special occasion, many details regarding the company were revealed. As time passes, it is becoming increasingly complex for developers to release games quickly, as development costs and time have increased tremendously.

However, the gaming giant has promised its fandom that it aims to release at least one big single-player game every year

Why it matters: The PlayStation 5 already has significantly fewer exclusives compared to its predecessors, which is a major concern among the gaming community. So, releasing more games on the console is essential.

PlayStation Tentpole Releases
Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Intergalactic, and Marvel’s Wolverine are PlayStation’s upcoming tentpole games

It is fair to say that the current generation of PlayStation lacks many first-party titles, which is a significant disappointment. The fans overall aren’t satisfied with this generation, so Sony has a lot of redemption to do.

Now, as pointed out by Genki on X, the company has promised its fandom that PlayStation aims to release at least one “Tentpole” game a year.

On single-player, we are focused on consistently devlivering at least 1 tentpole title per year, at the right time in the year, at the right quality level which players have come to expect from PlayStation Studios.

-Hermen Hulst

While the company has doubled down on live-service games and still intends to focus on them despite the colossal failure of Concord, it aims to release at least one big single-player game

For those not in the know, a tentpole refers to a major single-player game, such as the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine and Intergalactic. This year, the tentpole game from Sony would be Ghost of Yotei.

While Death Stranding 2 is about to be released, it isn’t a game from Sony’s first-party studio, but can be considered a tentpole until the timed exclusivity is over. Also, fans should notice that Hulst said “at least one game”. He didn’t say only one game, so there is a probability of more than one major first-party single-player game to be released each year.

What do you think about Hermen Hulst making a promise of releasing at least one tentpole game every year? Do you think Sony should focus solely on the single-player games and abandon the live-service genre?
