- This is due to the prolonged times in game development and massive budgets these days.
The current console generation is in a very weird spot right now. While we’ve undoubtedly seen more great releases since its advent, it doesn’t even come close in comparison to the older generation, especially the ones that leave a legacy.
Notably, we’ve even had considerably fewer exclusives for the PS5, compared to last generations, and the difference in the numbers is quite massive.
Why it matters: The major reason for the decrease in the number of exclusives is based on the fact that game development now takes a very long time and budgets have gotten out of hand.
For context, the PlayStation 3 had around 177 exclusive games. It also introduced fan favorite franchises like Uncharted, The Last of Us, Infamous, and more. The PS4 had fewer, although a respectable number of around 60 exclusives.
It also brought the likes of Horizon and Marvel’s Spider-Man franchises to life. Sony has released many of these titles on PC now, but initially all of them were exclusives to the console. For the PS5, the numbers are quite underwhelming.
We’ve just had about 13 exclusive releases for the PS5, this compared to PS4 is around 5x times fewer, and a whopping 10x compared to PS3. Most of them aren’t even new IPs, and are sequels or remasters of the older games.
This is concerning as we are over halfway through the life cycle of the PS5. Luckily, while PlayStation fans won’t be getting too many releases from Sony, Xbox is launching its titles for the consoles, extending its role as a publisher in the industry.
