Warner Bros Blames Suicide Squad For $200 Million Loss

Suicide Squad Was A Massive Disappointment!

Story Highlight
  • Warner Bros suffered significant losses to its gaming division over the last quarter.
  • Content revenue, which includes gaming, was down by 14% year-on-year.
  • The company lost $200 million after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, calling it a disappointment.

Last year was incredible for Warner Bros from a gaming perspective as they released Hogwarts Legacy, which was the top-selling game in the US and sold over 24 million copies.

However, things haven’t been great for Warner Bros in 2024 as they recently shifted their focus on live service titles and released Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which became one of the worst titles of the year already.

During the recent financial call, Warner Bros. blamed this title for quarterly earnings losses.

Why it matters: Just a few months since its launch, almost everyone has already moved on from the game, making it one of the biggest AAA failures of the industry in 2024.

As reported by Variety, during today’s financial call, the CEO of Warner Bros, David Zaslav, revealed that the studio’s revenue had dropped 12% year over year to $2.8 billion.

Addressing the decline, he mentioned Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League couldn’t perform as well as Hogwarts Legacy did in the first quarter of 2023. As expected, the former generated much lower revenue.

While actual sales figures remain unknown, the CEO of Warner Bros blames the disappointing release for losses as large as $200 million. With the industry facing layoffs, Warner Bros may consider cutting costs at Rocksteady Studio.

The developer’s latest performance puts it at risk of such measures, but we hope the team gets another chance at a proper single-player title after the recent disappointment.

Meanwhile, this live-service looter shooter has already been discounted to 50% of its price a few months after its launch, suggesting that more sales could follow soon.

Warner Bros has also revealed a new Batman Arkham game recently. Batman Arkham Shadows is the second VR entry in this franchise, with the publisher hoping to fulfil the promise of more releases in this universe.
