Another Xbox Game In Trouble!

Story Highlight
  • Perfect Dark has faced a troubled development since the beginning.
  • An insider confirms that things have not improved for this project despite the recent help from Crystal Dynamics.
  • He suggests that the reboot is suffering from a definitive direction.

Xbox has a massive lineup already announced for 2024 and beyond. Among the games that are still far away, Perfect Dark is perhaps the most interesting. It’s no secret that this reboot has not had the smoothest of development.

Having been announced nearly four years ago, Xbox has shared little on the reboot since 2020. If this alone wasn’t concerning, a reliable leaker states that this project is in a very rough state.

Why it matters: Xbox is receiving criticism industry-wide for its poor management, and such reports only add to the concerns surrounding this gaming giant’s future.

Speaking on the latest Giant Bombcast, industry insider Jeff Grubb discussed Perfect Dark when mentioning the long list of games already announced by Xbox.

He reiterated that the game is in a very rough state despite Microsoft’s efforts to bring in Crystal Dynamics for help on the project. The leaker also points to a lack of clarity for this reboot four years later.

While recent job listings and reports have pointed to the inclusion of first-person elements in the gameplay, Jeff Grubb states the team is still not set on these points. At this rate, Perfect Dark may be headed toward an untimely demise.

It’s in a very rough state. It doesn’t like it’s really come together.

Following this report, another insider, Shinobi602, joined the discussion. He corroborated the report, while other people from various media sources seem to suggest that this is indeed the case.

Perfect Dark Is Based On Unreal Engine 5

Interestingly, Xbox’s Matt Booty seemed quite hopeful about Perfect Dark last year, teasing a potential reveal for 2024. However, since then, Matt Booty has canceled the development of Redfall, shut down Arkane Austin, and closed Tango Gameworks.

At this rate, this project may be next.

This is particularly upsetting since encouraging information about Perfect Dark showed up not too long ago. The project appeared to be aiming for 60FPS gameplay, but it seems the developers have much bigger problems to solve for the time being.
