Sold More Than 12 Million Units In 7 Months!

Story Highlight
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 was among the three biggest games of 2023.
  • The Larian Studios CEO recently revealed that the CRPG has sold around twice as many copies as Divinity: Original Sin 2.
  • This means Baldur’s Gate 3 has sold nearly 15 million copies.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was arguably the highlight of 2023 for many gamers around the globe. The CRPG won Game of the Year and left a major mark on the industry in more ways than one.

In late February, it was revealed that the game had sold at least 10 million copies since its release. However, Larian Studios’ CEO states that actual sales figures are much higher, putting the game at around 15 million units sold.

Why it matters: Baldur’s Gate 3 came out of nowhere for many people. This success even shocked Larian Studios.

Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian, in an interview with Gamespot at GDC 2024, revealed the new sales figure for Baldur’s Gate 3. He said that the game has sold almost double the units of Divinity: Original Sin 2.

It’s almost double DOS 2. it’s doing really well.

-Swen Vincke

Divinity: Original Sin 2 has sold over 7.5 million copies, so given what Vincke has said, it is fair to assume that Baldur’s Gate 3 is close to the 15 million mark. At worst, it would still be much further away from 14 million copies sold.

It is also important to note that 2.5 million of these copies were sold in early access. Therefore, around 12 million or more units have been sold in less than a year since its official launch in 2023.

This success is not surprising, considering Baldur’s Gate 3 dominated every platform, including handhelds like the Steam Deck. It was also the biggest Steam game in terms of revenue generated.

Overall, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the gift that keeps on giving. However, Larian Studios has confirmed intentions to step away from the IP and focus on something new.

The developer is working on a new game, dubbing it the ultimate RPG. What form this game will take remains to be seen, but we patiently await more details from Larian Studios after its incredible influence on the industry last year.
