Major Upgrade For Nintendo Hardware In 2025!

Story Highlights
  • Nintendo Switch 2 is reportedly due for release next year in March.
  • An insider suggests it will perform like a PS4 Pro in docked mode.
  • He also states that the battery life will be superior to Steam Deck.

There is no shortage of leaks about the Nintendo Switch 2 as we head into the second quarter of 2024. Recently, reports stated that Nintendo delayed the console to March 2025.

Another insider has tried to nail an estimated performance target for the console. According to this update, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be comparable to a PS4 Pro in docked mode.

Why it matters: This performance target will allow Nintendo to offer more ambitious games, even if it lags behind the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X.

YouTube video

YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead discussed various aspects of the Nintendo Switch 2 during his latest video. He addressed the price point, performance target, and more.

According to his sources, Nintendo is not ignoring the power argument this time. It intends to target PS4 Pro benchmarks in docked mode, though previous reports pointed to Xbox Series S-like performance.

On the CPU side, he believes the console will be similar to the last-generation Xbox One X. Meanwihle, it is expected to pack Nvidia’s Tegra T239 SoC to deliver respectable graphics in both handheld and docked mode.

Because of Nvidia’s ray-tracing and DLSS capabilities, Moore’s Law is Dead states that the handheld will offer better image quality than the Steam Deck. He also believes it will ship with better battery life than the Steam Deck.

If the Steam Deck is doing 720p low at 40FPS, I think this will do 720p high with light ray tracing at 30FPS.

This report further highlights why analysts believe Nintendo’s upcoming hardware will be more iterative than revolutionary. However, PS4 Pro targets are still respectable, considering that the console was capable of running games like Red Dead Redemption 2.

As the wait for this hardware continues, the Nintendo Switch continues to maintain a strong presence on the market. With another anticipated year of first-party releases, this handheld’s final year is worth keeping an eye on.
