- New reports suggest the Nintendo Switch might be released in Q1 2025.
- Previous rumors pointed at a late 2024 release window.
- The 2025 release window has been opted to ensure a strong first-party line-up at release.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was rumored to launch in the second half of 2024. But it seems that we’ll have to wait a bit longer, as VGC has reported that the console will now be released in Q1 2025. So, it is likely skipping a 2024 holiday launch.
Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch was released about seven years ago. This console has reached the end of its lifespan and is badly in need of a refresh. But the wait for the new iteration might be longer than previously expected.
Apart from VGC, Brazilian Journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe heard similar whispers flying around the industry. He claims to have consulted five different sources on three continents, and all have revealed a similar 2025 release window.
Eurogamer has also corroborated the other reports. Their sources have said that the release window has been changed to ensure that the Nintendo Switch 2 has a solid first-party line-up at launch.
These reports fall in line with Nintendo’s release schedule. They are not known for releasing consoles during the holiday season since most hardware from the gaming giant typically comes out during spring.
This was also the case for the original Nintendo Switch.
Still, this means the Nintendo Switch has an extra year to shine on the market. With 139.36 million units already sold, this console could become the best-selling hardware in the industry with another year of support.
The company has reportedly planned about 10 million units for the next-generation console’s first Fiscal Year. However, it remains to be seen whether this target will change now that the release window has shifted.
The specifications should stay mostly consistent, with past leaks pointing to DLSS and RT support. You can read everything known about the Switch successor so far here.
