God of War 3 was one of PlayStation’s flagship titles during the PS3 era. Over 13 years ago, this title concluded Kratos’ narrative in the Greek saga, setting a new standard for scale and brutality in hack-and-slash games.
Despite its age and the new style of God of War, the Greek finale is still popular today. With the remaster selling 4 million units, the game has been able to coexist alongside the Norse games.
Interestingly, it is also the most popular classic game on PS Plus.
Why it matters: The older God of War games are among the few hack-and-slash games relevant today. While the franchise has taken a completely different turn, these titles offer a modern experience that is equally as good.
A Reddit user has provided a complete presentation of Sony’s PS Plus plans. Recent leaks have shown various internal documents, revealing PlayStation’s concerns about Xbox, in addition to its biggest games on PS Plus.
The classics catalog includes games that are part of PS Plus Premium. These titles include remasters and older games that can be streamed through the service. While many had expected games like The Last of Us to take the top spot, Santa Monica’s God of War 3 has come out on top.
According to the presentation, this remaster had nearly 1 million players and 5.4 million hours of recorded playtime. The first two God of War games, which are not playable natively, took the third spot with 566K players and 2.3 million hours of playtime.
Much of this popularity likely came from 2018’s God of War. Since this title was among PlayStation’s best-sellers last generation, it may have motivated new fans to try God of War 3 Remastered, the only previous game natively playable on the PS4.
God of War Ragnarok is the latest installment of the franchise. While this title is set in the Norse realm, the latest DLC has numerous references and callbacks to the old games.
With Kratos reflecting on his journey and battles against the Greek gods, this DLC is also worth checking out for those who enjoyed God of War 3 on the PS Plus subscription.
Apart from the PS Plus presentation, Insomniac’s data breach revealed the existence of a Venom spin-off and new X-Men games.
As for God of War, Santa Monica Studio appears to be working on the next installment of this IP. A new rumor has also pointed to remasters for the original trilogy, and judging by these figures from the leaks, this would be a wise decision from PlayStation.
