Active Development Has Been Halted!

Story Highlights
  • Star Wars: Knights Of the Old Republic Remake was announced in 2021 and has faced various hurdles since then.
  • The remake is reportedly dead, with an insider claiming that it is not in development right now.
  • It may have also changed studios after Saber Interactive was given project control.

Star Wars has historically been a massive part of the gaming industry. Recent releases like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have carried this momentum forward, receiving countless positive reviews at release.

Among the most exciting future games, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has been on every fan’s mind since its 2021 announcement. However, the remake’s development has been quite problematic.

Recently, various tweets and trailers of the game were removed, leading to speculation about the project being canceled. Following the confusion, it seems the remake is dead.

Why it matters: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was released back in 2003, and it has earned the reputation of being one of the best Star Wars games. Therefore, the prospect of a modern iteration was exciting for millions of nostalgic fans.

Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic KOTOR

Jeff Grubb, one of the most reliable insiders, has claimed during a recent episode of Game Mess Morning that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is no longer being worked on. He said:

“This game is not being worked on right now. It is not being worked on in any way at any studio.”

He has made it clear that the remake is not in development. However, the question remains if Embracer Group has completely moved on from the project or if it was temporarily put on hold.

In the past, this remake was assigned to Aspyr Media. Later, it was shifted to Saber Interactive, but Jeff Grubb suggests that the game may have gone through another developer change.

Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic is currently in the hands of Embracer Group. The company is facing various challenges of its own, recently laying off 900 employees after a restructuring plan.

During a recent interview, Embracer’s CEO also refused to comment on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake.

We believe the remake is unlikely to see the light of day. Because Embracer Group has so much to deal with right now, this project will likely be very low on its list of priorities.

Still, Star Wars has plenty of games coming out in the future. A third Star Wars Jedi game has been confirmed, and Ubisoft Massive is creating Star Wars Outlaws for 2024. Therefore, the IP will continue its influence on games in the future.
