Third Anniversary of Xbox Series S|X!

Story Highlights
  • It has been three years since Xbox Series S and X were released in the gaming market.
  • Both consoles have sold over 21 million units altogether since release.
  • The consoles offer exclusive games like Starfield and Forza Motorsport.

In 2020, Microsoft kicked off the ninth generation of home consoles with the Xbox Series S|X. Unlike previous generations, the company introduced two consoles to the market, aiming to capture different kinds of consumers.

Dubbed the most powerful console, the Xbox Series X was meant to compete with the PS5, while the Xbox Series S offered a cost-effective entry into the latest generation of gaming.

It has been exactly three years since these consoles were launched, and Microsoft has been doing much better than the last generation.

Why it matters: These systems are part of the traditional console lifecycle for Xbox. Since Microsoft will not release new hardware for a few more years, they are the core pillars of the company’s gaming business.

Xbox Series X

The Xbox Series X is a great addition to Microsoft’s legacy as a gaming giant. Recent titles like Alan Wake 2 have showcased its potential, allowing the console to pull ahead of the competition.

On the other hand, the cheaper Xbox Series S is also quite useful for those on a budget. While it may not be able to measure up to the PS5 or Xbox Series X in terms of raw visual fidelity and performance, it makes up for it in terms of value.

Starting at $300, the Xbox Series S has enabled millions of gamers to jump into current-generation gaming. In total, the two consoles have sold over 21 million units so far.

Over the last three years, these consoles have been through various ups and downs. The Xbox Series S, in particular, has been criticized for its hardware, with studios like Remedy stating that its weak GPU can cause many problems.

However, first-party releases like Starfield have also led to a surge in sales for the consoles, outlining a new era of success for the hardware.

Xbox Series S Carbon Black Now Available

Following the release of these consoles, Microsoft is stronger than ever. With Activision Blizzard under its belt, franchises like Call of Duty, Diablo, Overwatch, and more are classified as first-party IPs.

Therefore, future entries for these franchises will take full advantage of the Xbox Series S|X hardware.

We think both consoles were great additions to the gaming industry, especially the Xbox Series X. An all-digital model of this console with 2 TB of storage is expected in late 2024.

As for the Xbox Series S, Microsoft has already expanded the budget lineup with a 1 TB model released in September.
