Microsoft’s current-generation offerings include the Xbox Series S|X. One is a budget-friendly option without a disc drive, while the Xbox Series X is the most powerful console. However, the latter does not include a digital-only option.
This is expected to change in the future, with leaks and reports pointing to an all-digital Xbox Series X. Compared to Microsoft, PlayStation has taken a hybrid approach, introducing a disc drive add-on for the upcoming PS5 model.
This approach allows for more flexibility, and it appears Microsoft is considering similar options. According to a new rumor, Xbox will introduce a disc drive add-on in the future.
Why it matters: Microsoft’s current digital offerings cannot be upgraded with a disc drive. This could be a drawback for the eventual all-digital Xbox Series X since many still prefer physical media.
During the XboxEra podcast, the recently announced PS5 console was brought up, with Tom Warren praising Sony’s modular approach to the console. Nick Baker then added that he heard about something similar for Xbox. He said:
“I had heard they were doing a disc drive add-on for Xbox.”
While the report did not clarify which console the add-on would support, later discussions suggest both consoles would be supported.
In the past, a patent has already hinted at physical game support for the Xbox Series S. With Microsoft planning a new revision of the Xbox Series X without a disc drive, this add-on could help both of these consoles.
This would also mean Microsoft’s approach would not be like Sony’s. While the PS5 add-on is designed to be attached to the console and fit with its aesthetic, Xbox may go for a more discrete solution.
We believe this would be a great addition to the Xbox Series S|X ecosystem. Companies like Ubisoft have recently claimed that physical games are unlikely to be replaced entirely, and we agree with this statement.
Both methods of game distribution have their pros and cons, but more choice is always good, as it allows the consumers to make decisions based on their preferences.
While Xbox may be planning an external disc drive, PlayStation will be the first to debut this concept. The new model of the PS5 will launch in November, allowing Microsoft to study the market and its reception to this console design.
