Baldur’s Gate 3 Fails To Maintain 60FPS In PS5 Performance Mode

Falls As Low As 30FPS At Times!

The best-rated game of 2023 is now available on the PS5. After much anticipation, Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally playable on the console in early access, and it comes with all the updates and bug fixes released for the PC version after launch.

Larian Studios has launched the game with a quality and performance mode, with the latter targeting 60FPS. Unfortunately, the performance mode is less than stellar, frequently failing to hold 60FPS.

Why it matters: 60FPS is the standard for games released on the PS5, but 2023 has already shown several examples of games that cannot achieve a stable 60FPS performance on consoles.

As reported by GamingTech, Baldur’s Gate 3 fails to reach 60FPS very frequently. Performance mode shows a lot of variation, with the frame rate often falling into the low 40s and even going as low as 30FPS in the worst-case scenario.

On the other hand, even quality mode can exhibit drops below 30FPS in the worst-case scenario, but this mode is much more stable overall, providing the best experience for the game on consoles.

The video further notes that the performance mode comes with other issues like screen tearing, but PS5 users can rely on VRR(variable refresh rate) as a potential solution to the poor performance.

Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC was already known to be extremely CPU intensive. Since the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X were released in 2020, their Zen 2 CPUs have already started to struggle with modern demands, which was also expected for Larian Studios’ RPG.

The exact causes of the poor performance on the PS5 were not elaborated upon in the testing, but it is likely that Baldur’s Gate 3 is not too fond of the older CPU in the PlayStation console and requires better CPU hardware.

Recent rumors have claimed that Sony is working on a PS5 Pro, due for release in 2024. While the PS5 is already quite capable in its own right, recent games have shown that a more powerful console would greatly alleviate performance issues.

Games like Final Fantasy 16 and Immortals of Aveum have had to make significant sacrifices to resolution to achieve the 60FPS target, dropping the render resolution as low as 720p.

Baldur’s Gate 3 appears to continue the trend of disappointing performance on consoles, but the exceptional RPG is still a great addition to the growing library of current-generation games on the PS5.
