- A Redditor got a Ryzen 7 9800X3D from a local Walmart, only to find out it was fake.
- The store refused to issue a refund because the serial number didn’t match the box.
- The CPU failed to turn on and even showed visual differences from the original.
Hardware prices have gone completely out of hand since the AI-driven memory shortage began. It has directly or indirectly impacted every PC component’s pricing, taking them to extreme highs, which has even led to increased scams.
Recently, a customer bought an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D from Walmart, only to find that it was a fake. Even worse, the store refused to refund the processor as the serial number on the CPU didn’t match the one on the box.
Why it matters: Online scams have existed for a long time, but this customer went into the store, got it off the shelf, and even then he got a fake product, highlighting how careful we need to be right now.
BEWARE! Fake Ryzen CPU Sold by Walmart

Redditor quadbow posted on PCMasterRace to warn everyone of this scam. The user already had a 9800X3D, but it had a memory controller issue, so they needed a new one and got it from their local Walmart.
The user saw the clerk pull the sealed box right off the shelf, and he got a counterfeit product. The store’s warranty policy seems to be a mess as well, since they didn’t honor the customer’s request for a fake product.

They detected the fake CPU by putting it in the motherboard, and it didn’t turn on. Then they used their previous 9800X3D, and the PC turned on immediately, hinting that there was something wrong with the new one.
On comparing both, the user saw a distinct difference in color. Where the original has more of a greenish tint, the fake one is bluish. So, now it’s a lesson: whenever you buy something, verify the serial number with the box.
