Story Highlight
  • Epic Games boss believes that AI in development is the future of the gaming industry.
  • He thinks that the tech will usher in a brand new golden age of gaming.
  • It will help build titles quickly and will allow smaller teams to work under tight budgets.

AI in game development is becoming more and more widespread, with massive studios now integrating the tools into the process. However, some still have reservations, but the Epic Games boss is convinced that it is indeed the future.

He says that the use of AI in game development is going to usher in a golden era of gaming. He believes that it will help expedite the process and allow small teams to develop titles on much tighter budgets.

Why it matters: The point is indeed correct, and if AI is used carefully and only to speed up development, it does help a lot and can practically be a game changer for smaller studios, but there’s always the risk of AI slop.

Taking to X, Tim Sweeney talked about the future of game development. The CEO is, of course, quite supportive of AI. So much that they even entirely vibe-coded the Epic Games Launcher to make it lighter and faster.

That, however, didn’t turn out as expected, but that’s a different topic. Sweeney says that the tech will result in the golden age of gaming, but fans don’t seem to agree. While studios are accepting AI, fans are still wary of it.

The points that it expedites development and helps smaller teams are fine, but using generative AI for textures and more is lazy. It kills creativity, leading to slop. So, while AI in check is great, the use surpasses that.
