- Konami’s boss believes that generative AI hasn’t significantly changed the market.
- He says the tech won’t replace developers since people and creators bring innovation.
- Hayakawa says when ideas from devs get blended, new ideas are formed.
This year, we saw a significant trend in the gaming industry, with most studios integrating AI into game development. This has also fueled fears that the tech could eventually eliminate the workforce, since it’s more efficient and faster.
However, Konami boss has shut down fears that generative AI will replace humans, as developers will always be crucial for game development. Despite the efficiency, he believes human touch is still necessary for innovation.
Why it matters: AI has indeed taken over the gaming industry, but we’ve increasingly seen executives talk about how developers are still at the center, and they’re using the tech only to expedite development.

A new Digital Entertainment Business section report outlines Konami President Hideki Hayakawa’s insights on generative AI in game development. He believes that fears are wrong, and the tech won’t replace developers.
Even if AI use does lead to improvements in production efficiency, I believe that the most important factors in producing entertaining and innovative video games are people and creators.

Hayakawa says that he thinks AI isn’t bringing any “significant changes” to the market environment. He states that the entry barriers have already been lowered due to modern engines, so gen AI doesn’t do much.
Game development isn’t a single person’s job; it takes a whole team. When ideas are exchanged, they get blended, leading to gameplay innovation, which results in brilliant games, which isn’t possible by using AI.
