The Movie Will Tell An Original Story Instead!

Story Highlight
  • CD Projekt claims that the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 movie will not be a game adaptation.
  • Instead, it will tell an original story, likely featuring original characters like the anime series.
  • The movie is being developed in a partnership with Paramount.

CD Projekt Red has been on a roll with Cyberpunk 2077 since its shaky release. The team has massively improved the experience and turned it into one of the best redemption stories in the industry. A sequel is also in the works under a talented pool of developers.

The franchise has also been expanded via the Edgerunners anime, which brought a swath of new players to the game. As season 2 of the anime draws near, CDPR has now confirmed that its upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 movie will not merely be a 1:1 game adaptation.

Why it matters: CD Projekt Red has already shown it is capable of successful original stories in Cyberpunk, as we saw in season 1 of the Edgerunners anime. This strong track record has made fans quite excited for the planned movie adaptation.

Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 has seen a resurgence multiple times since its tumultuous launch.

In an interview with PAP Biznes, CDPR co-CEO Michal Nowakowski says the movie aims to tell an original story set in the world of Cyberpunk. It will likely include original characters and could launch sometime in late 2028 to early 2029.

At this point, we can only say that we definitely don’t want to make a film adaptation of the game.

The movie is being made in collaboration with Paramount, which is under Skydance after the Warner Bros. acquisition. The live-action Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventur is helming the project.

We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won’t be a one-to-one translation of the game’s story.

Cyberpunk 2077 35 Million Sales
The game has sold over 35 million copies by now.

On a side note, Michal also confirmed that CDPR has no plans to ditch boxed editions of its upcoming releases. But he added that disc releases are not in the company’s hands if the console manufacturer stops supporting the format.

Additionally, the studio’s original IP, Project Hadar, has now moved beyond the vision phase but has yet to enter pre-production. It is expected to be the company’s biggest game to date.
