Despite PlayStation shooting itself in the foot multiple times this generation, Xbox has failed to capitalise and catch up to its competitor. The company has been busy fixing self-inflicted issues, recently gutting over 3,000 employees due to the lackluster sales of its consoles.
With Game Pass and the multiplatform strategy also failing to add meaningful growth, Xbox hasn’t found breathing room anywhere. However, despite all of its shortcomings, an industry veteran thinks Team Green’s success is necessary for the gaming world to flourish.
Why it matters: Competition is necessary for the health of any ecosystem, and gaming is no exception to the rule. The sooner Xbox returns to form, the better it will be for consumers.
In an interview with Kotaku, former PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden stated that he wants Xbox to be competitive once again, as it will elevate the gaming industry.

While mulling over recent job cuts at the company, the industry veteran hoped Team Green could thrive just like the Xbox 360 era, as it would create interest in the gaming world. Layden emphasised that the battle between Xbox and PlayStation is an important precursor to innovation in the industry, as both companies need to stand out.
The former SIE CEO also insisted that if Sony keeps dominating proceedings, creativity could become muted and even die out. Hence, Shawn Layden wants to see Xbox get its mojo back and make gaming exciting once again.
Even though the company is facing many issues at present, CEO Asha Sharma is trying to bring back the old Xbox, making titles exclusive to the platform once again, while exploring ways to make next-gen hardware affordable. Therefore, one can only hope Team Green can make a comeback in the forthcoming generation, like Shawn Layden wants.
