Story Highlight
  • Fans are worried that the next-gen consoles will be too expensive after Steam Machine.
  • Xbox CSO says that they are now working hard to change the console model.
  • He said they are trying to make Helix affordable, while still being profitable.

Steam Machine launching at over $1,000 was the sign that next-gen hardware won’t come cheap. This has led to speculation if this will now be the entry price for console gaming, which is generally considered the more budget-friendly route.

Xbox CSO has weighed in on the situation and says that the company is re-evaluating its strategies and rethinking the console model to make sure that Project Helix is affordable for the masses, so it sells well.

Why it matters: Analysts have claimed that due to the PC-console hybrid nature of Helix, it will also match the Steam Machine’s price, but Xbox has been assuring its fans that despite everything, it won’t be too pricey.

Xbox is trying hard to keep its next-gen hardware affordable

In a recent interview with The Game Business, Matthew Ball talked about the future of their consoles. He says they are aware of the market and the high chip prices, and are working hard to rethink every step.

We are working hard to rethink what the console model can look like. We are very cognizant of the ways in which we need to change as a company to make sure it (Helix) is affordable.

Steam Machine’s pricing rang alarm bells for console pricing

He continued that they are working to rethink their console model for Project Helix to find a way that works for everyone. This includes keeping the console affordable, but also earning enough profits to fund future projects.

Now, it is hard to decipher what he means by affordable in the current market. The RAM prices are crazy high, and with the Xbox Series X already costing $800, the future looks grim, but let’s see what Microsoft does.
