- Modern Warfare 4 has launched to over 227,000 concurrent Steam players.
- The title has doubled Black Ops 7’s launch player count from last year, but it has fallen behind Black Ops 6’s launch numbers.
- Modern Warfare 4’s reception is also a large improvement over Black Ops 7’s.
Despite the lack of much anticipation before its release, Modern Warfare 4 has ended up being rather well-received compared to recent Call of Duty titles, especially Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 3.
In fact, the game’s launch figures on Steam suggest that it has outpaced Black Ops 7 in terms of sales by 2x.
Why it matters: Call of Duty fans have long been fatigued by the series’ recent entries, but it seems Modern Warfare 4 is finally regaining some momentum for the IP.

After beating Black Ops 7 in early access, the title managed to hit 227,622 concurrent players on the platform at launch. During Black Ops 7’s launch last year, Call of Duty barely recorded a concurrent peak above 100,000 players. This is, of course, a major improvement after just one year.
However, Modern Warfare 4 is still doing worse on the platform than Black Ops 6. The latter managed to hit over 315,000 concurrent players on Steam at launch, making it the best-performing Call of Duty launch of the last three entries.
As for Modern Warfare 4, the game’s reviews are also solid at the moment. Many have appreciated Infinity Ward’s efforts on the campaign, with even DMZ receiving plenty of praise.
The modern Call of Duty multiplayer formula remains divisive, but the series has certainly turned things around compared to last year’s nearly unanimously criticized entry.
Do note that Modern Warfare 4, unlike Black Ops 7, skipped a Game Pass release. However, this is unlikely to be the sole reason behind its Steam success, especially because Black Ops 6 saw plenty of success on the platform despite arriving on Game Pass.
