- Tim Sweeney criticized Steam’s AI disclosure policy in a recent social media.
- The Epic Games boss argued that developers are being pushed into making a political statement.
- AI in games continues to be a controversial subject, but Epic Games has already embraced the technology.
Epic Games recently outlined its AI focus, practically confirming that the team is going all in on the technology. Amid this focus, CEO Tim Sweeney has also criticized Steam’s AI disclosure.
Why it matters: General audiences seem to appreciate Steam’s AI disclosure, but many developers are not on board with this feature.
Forcing developers to write a political statement to be used against them by the hate mob they’re helping organize is abhorrent.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has taken aim at Valve’s Steam AI disclosure policy. He criticized the rule for making developers disclose AI use in a way he sees as politically charged.
This is also not the first time the Epic Games CEO has criticized this disclosure. Previously, he argued that it made success for developers much harder when arguing against the policy.
Of course, the general audience likely has the opposite view. In fact, many even asked Steam for an AI-based games filter during the recent wave of Steam Next Fest demos.
Forcing developers to write a political statement to be used against them by the hate mob is abhorrent.

The responses to Sweeney’s tweet are very telling of the general audience’s reaction to AI use in games. Unfortunately, it appears that generative AI is here to stay, so public reactions might also evolve with time.
