Story Highlight
  • Industry analysts predict only one out of Xbox and PlayStation will survive next-gen.
  • The report crowns Nintendo as the leading seller, with the other two fighting for the 2nd spot.
  • It is too early to predict which will come out on top.

The console war has mostly been non-existent this generation. Sony emerged as the clear winner with the PS5, while Microsoft had largely compromised Xbox Series sales. Yet again, Nintendo maintained its spot, and analysts predict it will continue to do so

According to data from industry analysts, only one out of PlayStation or Xbox will survive with their next-gen consoles alongside Nintendo, which is gearing up to launch its latest handheld.

Why it matters: With the launch of GTA 6 and many other mind-blowing titles later on, the gaming industry is expected to receive a significant boost next year. Therefore, things will be tricky for home consoles, as only one could emerge as the ultimate winner.

Only one out of Microsoft and Sony will dominate in next-gen consoles.

DFC Intelligence has dropped its latest Annual Market Report, which predicts the downfall of either Xbox or PlayStation for the next generation. It also expects record revenue growth for the industry in 2025 and the number of gamers to exceed 4 billion by 2027.

There isn’t room for more than two major console systems. Sony or Microsoft will struggle mightily in a distant third place

The report hailed Nintendo as the downright king of the consoles for the next generation. It states the results will depend on who gains the early momentum.

DFC further states it’s too early to predict who will be on top. Things can get tricky here as Xbox is expected to drop its next console in 2026, while rumors point at Sony’s PS6 a few years later.

Xbox is currently focusing more on publishing than the console market, so we’ll have to wait and see how these factors combine to create the ultimate outcome.
