Outsold Street Fighter 6 & Mortal Kombat 1!

Story Highlight
  • Tekken 8 has sold 2 million copies since its release.
  • The game has exceeded Bandai Namco’s expectations.
  • This milestone puts it ahead of Street Fighter 6. It should also be able to outpace Mortal Kombat 1.

Tekken 8 has been one of the biggest releases in 2024 so far. Following new records set by its predecessor, this game launched to much anticipation, quickly proving itself after eclipsing Tekken 7’s Steam concurrent player count on launch day.

Nearly a month later, Bandai Namco has announced an incredible sales milestone for Tekken 8. The game has sold 2 million units, outpacing modern fighting game competition from 2023.

Why it matters: Tekken 8 introduces various new features that make it more accessible to a bigger and more casual audience. This may have been one reason for its explosive success.

Adding to its latest financial earnings report, Bandai Namco confirmed Tekken 8 exceeded expectations to reach this sales figure within three weeks.

This makes it the faster-selling game compared to last year’s Street Fighter 6. Capcom’s 2D fighting game reached this milestone in one month, putting Tekken ahead by a few days.

Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 1 did not receive exact figures until two months into its lifecycle. By then, the game had sold close to 3 million units, making it difficult to compare. However, this 3 million sales figure was not reached until January.

At this rate, Tekken 8 is on track to beat Mortal Kombat 1 and is in a comfortable position compared to its predecessor. The 7th mainline release reached 2 million sales in around two months, showing the impact of Bandai Namco’s extended marketing strategy.

Pre-release measures like various beta tests and a public demo likely played a significant role in this success. Those looking to try Tekken 8 without a purchase can still download the free demo and play through the first chapter of story mode, in addition to free battles.

Tekken 8 will receive additional content in the following months, expanding the roster with each new season. Fans can expect returning and original characters as part of this expansion, making the fighting game even more exciting for casual and hardcore audiences.
