Neither Sony Nor Valve Will Be Able To Have A Monopoly On Gaming, Says Epic CEO

Sweeney Thinks That Gaming Companies Should Instead Work Together And Connect.

Story Highlight
  • According to Tim Sweeney, no company can monopolise gaming anymore.
  • Due to the industry’s vulnerable nature, even Sony and Valve can’t control more than their fair share.
  • As a result, the Epic CEO thinks the gaming giants should start working together and connecting.

Despite hitting another revenue record this year, the gaming industry is in more turmoil than ever before. AAA budgets show no signs of declining, while mass layoffs are expected at major gaming companies like PlayStation and Xbox.

Industry leaders have pitched a myriad of solutions to this current predicament, and one such figure is Epic boss Tim Sweeney. According to the CEO, companies like Xbox and Sony should start building communities together instead of fighting for a bigger share of the industry.

Why it matters: Even though Sweeney’s take is more pragmatic, it’s hard to see a future where all these rival entities come together for a better future for the gaming industry.

Console War sony valve
With Xbox returning to exclusives, console wars are in effect again.

In an interview with PC Gamer at last week’s Unreal Fest, Tim Sweeney stated that no gaming giant will be able to have an absolute monopoly over the gaming world, whether it is Sony, Microsoft, or Valve.

It’s now clear that nobody’s going to end up with an absolute monopoly over gaming. Sony is not going to have one, Microsoft’s not going to have one, Valve’s not going to have one, Apple’s not going to have one, Google is not going to have one.

Due to the chaotic nature of the industry at present, even entities like Google and Apple can’t control the market. Hence, according to the Epic CEO, instead of downsizing and laying off more staff, major companies should start connecting instead.

While discussing his “Team Open” initiative, which is meant to connect video games and economies across several developers, the Epic CEO explained that the attitude of Microsoft and Sony has changed due to the current climate of the gaming world.

The industry is going through a darker period, and instead of trying to conquer the ecosystem, the gaming juggernauts are more open to working with each other. As per Sweeney, these companies will realise that connecting brings more value than remaining separate.

Tim Sweeney is even open to working with Valve.

In the interview, the Epic CEO even extended a hand to PC rival Valve, saying he could help the company capitalise on opportunities.
