Sony’s Disc Erasure Was Motivated By The Reluctance To Print Millions Of GTA 6 Discs, Claims Insider

The Company Didn't Think The Expenditure Would Be Worth It.

Story Highlight
  • Moore’s Law is Dead claims that Sony shifted to a digital-only strategy as it didn’t want to print millions of GTA 6 discs.
  • The company only decided on this move recently, and the Rockstar title was an underlying reason.
  • Sony also didn’t want to upgrade its Austria plant for PS6 disc production.

With the PlayStation boycott in full swing, gamers are doing their best to fight Sony’s divisive decision to end disc production. Despite some of the biggest AAA titles of the year, like Resident Evil Requiem, selling incredibly well on physical media, the Japanese gaming giant has stuck to its narrative.

New PlayStation ads are also emphasizing the end of disc production by pushing the digital-only PS5, making the return of physical media seem more hopeless with every passing day. As it turns out, the biggest title launching this year, GTA 6, was part of the reason Sony was motivated to announce this new strategy.

Why it matters: If Sony’s motivation behind giving up on disc production is really GTA 6, then this decision could come back to haunt the company later on.

According to industry insider Moore’s Law is Dead, Sony decided to kill physical discs after taking into account the cost of producing hundreds of millions of GTA 6 discs.

The leaker stated that the company only devised this strategy recently and made the final decision after realising that printing so many discs for GTA 6 wouldn’t be worth the return. Furthermore, Moore’s Law is Dead claims that Sony also didn’t want to upgrade their Austria plant for PS6 discs, reverting it to the production of the more profitable lenses instead.

Considering how major companies like Sony lose 15% of revenue on every physical disc sold, going all-digital while eradicating the $10 disc-production fee is arguably the easiest way to maximise GTA 6 profits. Of course, this should be taken with a grain of salt, as Moore’s Law is Dead states in his post that he’s only 90% sure about this information.

PS5 Physical Games
PlayStation would lose 15% of revenue on every copy of GTA 6 sold if it shipped with a physical disc.

But considering the leaker’s successful track record with respect to PlayStation and Sony, his word does hold weight. All in all, GTA 6 being the nail in the coffin for discs lends a little bit of credence to the inspiration behind the latest leaks.
