- PlayStation players are planning a blackout beginning August 23.
- The blackout was announced last month to protest PlayStation’s permanent cancellation of physical games.
- It remains to be seen how many gamers will participate and whether this blackout will be effective at all.
PlayStation announced its shift to digital-only gaming a while back, and many were quick to oppose this decision.
Fans even announced a one-week blackout of the PlayStation Store as a show of solidarity against this decision. Multiple weeks after the announcement, this boycott is set to begin tomorrow.
Why it matters: PlayStation’s disc announcement continues to be a hotly debated subject in the games industry, with fans still unable to completely accept this move.
Sony wants to abandon fans? Let's give them a small taste of their own medicine!
Together with other creators we call for a 1 week #PSBlackout in August. No logins, no play sessions, no purchases on any of Sony's platforms. pic.twitter.com/v6JvdvbHLD

The main goal of the blackout is to simply stay away from PlayStation and its services for an entire week.
Players hope that the protest will show Sony that demand for physical games still exists. Moreover, the blackout aims to address other grievances fans have with PlayStation, such as the recent studio closures, poor communication, etc.
The interesting part is that efforts to oppose this decision have slowed lately, so it will be interesting to see whether players turn up for the boycott. Of course, this movement is being helmed by the more enthusiastic PlayStation fans.
The more mainstream audience is likely unaware that this boycott is currently happening.

As gamers prepare, PlayStation has yet to acknowledge much of the backlash to this decision. The gaming giant plans to continue proceeding as intended, hoping fans will eventually adapt to the digital-only future.
