More Industry Devs Continue Speaking Out Against Physical Disc Cancellation!

Story Highlight
  • The Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director has reacted to PlayStation’s latest disc-related announcement.
  • His response lamented the continued decline of physical media across the console business.
  • The entire Sandfall Interactive team is saddened by the shift away from physical games.

Physical media remains a major concern for console players as publishers increasingly prioritize digital storefronts, subscriptions, and disc-free hardware. PlayStation has also come forward, revealing that it will no longer support discs from 2028.

This announcement sparked interesting reactions from veterans like Yoko Taro and Hideo Kojima. Now, the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 team has also discussed PlayStation’s decision, expressing sadness at the impending death of physical games.

Why it matters: Physical releases give players an alternative to platform-controlled digital storefronts. They have also been around for multiple decades, becoming an important part of the larger industry.

Expedition 33 won Game of the Year in 2025

Speaking to Automaton, Expedition 33 director Guillaume Broche admitted to being a huge fan of game stores. He stated that most of his gaming time is spent on PC these days, but the director still finds this announcement quite disheartening.

Director Guillaume Broche appreciates physical games for being a tangible part of the industry. He notes that game collections are part of the “artistic” aspect of the industry, so it is sad to see them on their way out.

Similarly, Sandfall Interactive CTO Tom Guillermin chimed in and stated that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s physical release was something special to the team. This is why the studio pursued disc-based distribution despite it being less convenient than a digital-only release.

I find it super sad because I really like game stores. We have a lot of people on the team who play on PS5 and love to collect physical discs.

-Guillaume Broche

The death of physical media means many of these countries without PlayStation Store access will be locked out of buying PS6 games via official means.
The physical games sector has been declining for 17 years now.

With PlayStation discontinuing physical discs soon, many have even attempted to boycott this announcement. However, it appears these efforts have done little so far, and the gaming giant is still hoping to weather the storm until everyone moves on.
