OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has taken things one step further, supposedly hinting at an AI-powered genie for humanity’s future.
Why it matters: The CEO’s latest comment has drawn a lot of attention, with some calling it nonsensical. On the other hand, others seem to be quite excited for AI to reach its true potential.
As reported by ShadowofEzra on Twitter/X, Altman recently spoke about this “AI genie” in an interview. He described how the genie would effectively grant any wish a human could have, noting that the very first wish should be beneficial to humanity as a whole.
The “genie” is a metaphor for highly capable AI rather than a literal promise that every request will be fulfilled. However, it goes without saying that the CEO’s statement does come across as very bizarre and dystopian at first.
We are close to creating a genie that can grant any wish. You start making these wishes and the computer grants them.
Of course, generative AI’s big selling point as a tool has been as an assistant for everyday life. What Altman describes is more of an ideal for companies to chase, so it will be interesting to see when, if ever, said “AI genie” becomes a reality.
Elsewhere, demand for AI continues to impact memory supply and consumer electronics prices around the globe.
These shortages are expected to continue for several more years at this point, and if Sam Altman’s words are anything to go by, AI companies have much more to achieve, which will require further infrastructure and investments.
