As Xbox faces a major looming reorganization, Sony is experiencing its own fallout with Destiny 2 maker Bungie. The studio has been on a steep decline, even as it launched the new live-service Marathon to a lukewarm reception after many years.

New reports reveal that the PlayStation maker reportedly blames Bungie for a number of its live-service failures over the years.

The studio was supposed to be a huge player in its GaaS strategy, but its shaky portfolio failed to support Sony’s push into the volatile market.

Why it matters: Bungie has arguably been in its worst state after the Sony buyout. Fans hoped that Destiny 2 would continue seeing high-quality expansions and that Marathon would live up to expectations, but the reality was far bleaker.

French journalist @SylvainTrinel on Twitter clarifies that his sources deep within PlayStation explain that Sony executives hold a ‘desire for revenge’ against Bungie

Sony is disappointed with how the studio executed its GaaS strategy, with other live-service failures like Concord further ruining the company’s grand plans.

Sylvain also reiterates that Sony aims to fire at least half of the entire Bungie team later in the summer. Most of these layoffs will directly target the Destiny 2 staff, which ultimately erases the chances of a next game in the franchise.

The journalist reaffirms that the layoff target is 50% after initial report.

Regardless, a huge number of PlayStation employees are reportedly against discontinuing Destiny 2 and looming layoffs.

For those not in the know, Sony is taking these drastic measures to end Destiny 2 support and shrink Bungie after confirming a staggering $565 million loss on the studio.

Bungie is committed to Marathon despite its steadily dropping numbers. The entry’s Season 2 and the free week period did not produce good enough and long-lasting results. It’s unclear just how long that project will survive in the current environment.
