- 50% of Bungie’s staff will be laid off this summer, according to a French journalist.
- Following the end of support for Destiny 2, Sony is looking to downsize the studio.
- Other insiders have also heard rumblings of mass layoffs set to occur at the studio sooner rather than later.
The gaming world has suddenly fallen into turmoil, with Xbox being at the forefront of all the chaos unfolding in the industry. Reports have emerged of the shutdown of several studios owned by the gaming giant, with developers seeking buyouts to avoid the worst outcome.
But the problem doesn’t end with Xbox; other major companies in the ecosystem are also expected to face similar consequences in the coming weeks. As it turns out, Marathon and Destiny 2 creator Bungie could unsurprisingly become one of the studios to get hit by layoffs.
Why it matters: Bungie’s demise was arguably the most preventable story in the gaming industry, but Sony has left the studio in a mess after betting on the wrong products.

According to reputable French journalist Sylvain Trinel, Bungie should expect massive layoffs in the summer that will affect 50% of the studio’s workforce. As per the BFMTV reporter, at least half of the developers working permanently or on a contract basis will be let go by Sony after the end of Destiny 2 support.
Trinel shared that this news is extremely sad because if Bungie had been managed properly, something like this would have never happened. However, with Marathon failing to attract players, Sony has no other option but mass layoffs, according to the reporter.
Other insiders have also reported the same thing, with a downsizing of Bungie only feeling like a matter of time as the studio lost $565 million in value after betting on Marathon instead of the Destiny franchise.

Following the final update for Destiny 2, the game has peaked with a higher number of concurrent players than Marathon’s all-time player peak for an entire week. The latter also failed to gain new players after a free server slam and the launch of its season 2, making Bungie’s situation even bleaker.
