- Xbox is reportedly going to lay off several employees and close studios next month.
- The studios are reportedly negotiating with Xbox to go independent from the company.
- These studios include Ninja Theory, Arkane Studios, and Compulsion Games.
Layoffs and studio closures at Xbox are all but confirmed at this point. Some major studios, including Ninja Theory, Arkane, and Compulsion Games, are at a huge risk. However, there seems to be a ray of sunshine at the end of the tunnel.
A new report indicates that the Studios at risk of closure will be given a chance to go independent. This is good news, considering there might be an opportunity that the studios might avoid the catastrophe of a total shutdown.
Why it matters: The rumors started circulating a couple of days ago and have since been corroborated by multiple insiders and journalists. Some have even described the upcoming layoffs as a ‘bloodshed’ at Xbox.

According to Bloomberg, the studios are in active negotiations with Xbox and may be allowed to go independent. While they will have to find new investors, it’ll be their chance to at least survive as a solo studio.
Now, most of these studios, including Ninja Theory and Compulsion, were already independent before Xbox acquired them. So, it will be kind of a fresh start for them, but they’ll have to secure funding to get going.

Anyhow, it is now looking very likely that Xbox is set to significantly reduce its headcount and studios as part of the restructuring of the company as a whole. Let’s just hope the studios and developers find a new home.
