Ninja Theory Delivered Just 2 Games in 8 Years With Xbox, Signaling That Threat Of Closure Was Already Looming

Released Only Hellblade 2 And Bleeding Edge Since 2018

Story Highlight
  • There have been claims that Xbox is planning to shutter multiple first-party studios.
  • Among them is Ninja Theory, which has released just 2 games in the last 8 years.
  • It seems that the threat of a studio closure had been looming for a long time.

It has been claimed that Xbox will look very different in the upcoming months based on a major restructuring that will cost a lot of jobs and studios. Among the rumored studios are Arkane, Compulsion, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory.

However, for the latter, the threat of closure might have been looming for a while now. Xbox acquired Ninja Theory in 2018, and since then, the studio has only delivered 2 games, and another project was canceled during development.

Why it matters: If the studio has been delivering games with many hours of gameplay and high replayability, this might’ve been a fine pace; however, since they make relatively short ones, that’s too few in almost a decade.

Hellblade 2
Ninja Theory has delivered only 2 games since it was acquired by Xbox

Xbox acquired the studio after the success of the original Hellblade. Since then, they have had 2 releases: Hellblade 2 and Bleeding Edge. The last one was a half-baked live service title that overall had a very mediocre to poor reception.

Hellblade games have been good and profitable too; however, they seem too short to justify the time taken. The sequel was announced in 2019 and released in 2024, a 5-year gap for a title that merely takes 6-7 hours

Multiple Xbox studios are currently at risk of being shut down

People have also complained that the short length makes it feel more like a tech demo than an actual game. It seems as though all the studios that have had slow or less profitable releases are at risk of shutdown now.

What are your thoughts on Ninja Theory having delivered just 2 titles since Xbox’s takeover? Do you think it’ll be shut down? Let us know your opinions in the comments or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers Forum.
