It Was Supposed To Be An Experimental Horror Game With New Ways Of Storytelling!

Story Highlight
  • Ninja Theory has canceled its ambitious title Project Mara to completely focus on Senua.
  • It was an experimental horror game that explored new ways of storytelling.
  • Unfortunately, the whole studio is working on Senua, so the project is shelved.

At the recent Xbox Games Showcase, Ninja Theory out of nowhere revealed the next installment in the Hellblade franchise. While fans were thrilled about the project, they were also wondering what happened to the studio’s other major project.

Announced in 2020, Project Mara was supposed to be a highly ambitious project that has unfortunately been shelved, as the whole studio is currently working on the Senua game that Ninja Theory announced yesterday.

Why it matters: The project had been in jeopardy ever since it was announced, based on the fact that the studio always prioritized the Hellblade franchise over it, so the cancellation, in a way, was a long time coming.

Project Mara was supposed to be the studio’s experimental horror game

In a new Xbox Wire article, Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews revealed that Project Mara has been canceled and the whole team is focused on Senua, which will be an action game set in the Hellblade universe

It is not a direct continuation of the last game, but it still happens after its events. As for Project Mara, that was a highly ambitious experimental horror game that was supposed to explore some brand new ways of storytelling.
